Health reminds everyone that each person has a reserved dose and encourages everyone to apply for it
Unvaccinated people over the age of 60 are 54 times more likely to be admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) than those who have received a booster dose of COVID-19, according to data from public hospitals in the Balearic Islands as of 31 January.

For this reason, the Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs reminds everyone in the Balearic Islands that each person has a reserved dose and encourages all those who have not yet done so to make an appointment to receive it within the corresponding period, given that adequate immunisation reduces the risk of developing the disease is a serious form.

According to the data, the rate of vaccinated over-60s with the booster dose admitted to the ICU is 3.4 per 100,000 people who have received it, while the rate of non-immunised over-60s admitted to the ICU is 184.2 per 100,000 unvaccinated people. Thus, the rate of unvaccinated over-60s admitted to the ICU is 54 times higher than those who have received the third dose.

In addition, people over 60 with booster doses have half the risk of being admitted to an ICU for covid than the unvaccinated population under 60 years of age. In the latter group, the rate of ICU admissions is 6.1 per 100,000 unimmunised while in those over 60 with the booster, as indicated above, it is 3.4 per 100,000. The rate of admissions of those under 60 with the booster dose is 1.9 per 100,000 persons who have received it.

Differences by age group

In the 60-69 age group, the rate of admissions to intensive care units of unimmunised users is 168.2 per 100,000 unvaccinated compared to 3.3 per 100,000 of those with the booster dose. The risk is therefore 50 times higher.

In the 70-79 age group, the difference is much greater. The unvaccinated are 63.6 times more likely to be admitted to the ICU than those who have received the booster. This is because the rate of ICU admissions of the unvaccinated in this age group is 260.8 per 100,000 unvaccinated and the rate of admissions of boosters is 4.1 per 100,000 boosters.

At younger ages, the difference is also significant. Between 50 and 59 years of age, the incidence of non-immunised people in the ICU is 29 times that of people with the booster. There are 63.8 unimmunised people per 100,000 unvaccinated people and 2.2 booster patients in the ICU per 100,000 people who have received the booster.
