The Vice President and Minister for Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, Juan Pedro Yllanes, visited this Thursday the shipyard of 100% electric lutes of the company Medvolt Marine, which is leading the electrification of pleasure boats thus promoting the decarbonisation of the sector and reported that the Investment Plan for Energy Transition of the Balearic Islands (PITEIB) has up to 15 million euros to decarbonise the marine industry.

The visit was also attended by the Director-General of Energy and Climate Change, Pep Malagrava, the Director-General of Industrial Policy, Toni Morro, and the manager of Medvolt Marine, Gonzalo Coterillo.

During the visit, Vice President Yllanes explained that the PITEIB includes a 70-million-euro programme focused on tackling the main challenges of insularity, such as sustainable mobility, decarbonisation of the sea and the water cycle. In this regard, he indicated that line 3 of this programme, focused on the decarbonisation of the sea, specifically includes that of these 70 million, 15 million are exclusively for the decarbonisation of the nautical sector.

Speaking to the media, Yllanes pointed out that “the electrification of vessels is in line with the objectives set by the Balearic Government, the State Government and the European Union. We are aware that mobility is one of the major emitters and it is vital to start and facilitate its decarbonisation, which must also be linked to the decarbonisation of the ports. The Government is looking to the sea to reduce emissions and be more sustainable. Examples like the one we visited today are the way forward, and that is why we are making available to nautical companies up to 15 million euros from the PITEIB to advance the process of electrification of vessels. In no case is it intended to increase the marine fleet of the Islands, but to replace it with a more sustainable one”.

Finally, Yllanes pointed out that “we have a duty to care for and protect our environment, especially the maritime environment, in a place that lives directly from the Mediterranean. These actions go in this direction, they include the environmental perspective and sustainability in a sector that still has a long way to go”.

For his part, the Director-General for Energy and Climate Change, Pep Malagrava, said that “the Next Generation funds must serve to transform our economy and with examples like the one we visited today we see that we can bet on a green industry that helps to meet the climate targets for reducing emissions. Whether fishing boats, inter-island transport or recreational boats, they must reduce their emissions, and electrifying engines is a great solution. We continue to look to the sea in order to decarbonise our islands and to promote stable, quality jobs”.

Line 3 of the Energy Transition Investment Plan

This line aims to electrify the ports of the Balearic Islands and the installation of renewable energies in the port itself or in a nearby urban environment to provide this electrification. It also aims to encourage vessels to adapt to less polluting combustion and at the same time help to create an industrial hub to accelerate the implementation of companies that can promote stable and quality jobs.

These investments can promote the manufacture of zero-emission boats in the Balearic Islands to improve the sustainable industrial fabric of the Community, as well as the acquisition of boats for individuals and companies, and also electric propulsion systems for existing boats.

In addition, the aim is to support innovative projects at sea, which can also be an asset in the energy transition, both in the production and storage of renewable energy in relation to the sea, such as the use of marine energy in ports, renewable hydrogen applied to maritime mobility, decarbonisation of a maritime transport line or other innovative actions.
