The programme of Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destinations has been developed by the Secretariat of State for Tourism (SETUR) with the participation of the Autonomous Communities and in the case of the Balearic Islands, the presentation of projects eligible for an award has been coordinated by the Ministry of Economic Model, Tourism and Labour, through the Directorate General of Tourism and the Tourism Strategy Agency of the Balearic Islands (AETIB).
Specifically, the two plans approved by the ministry will be implemented, one in Mallorca and the other in Menorca. They have a budget of 4.86 million euros and the Secretary of State for Tourism will contribute a total of 1.62 million euros, 33% of the total. In both cases, these are direct interventions for the tourism sector with the aim of reinforcing competitiveness at a key moment for the sector.
In the case of Mallorca, it is an action presented by the Calviá Town Council, where with almost two million tourists a year and 60,000 hotel beds, the Sustainability Plan aims to reorganise the main entrance road to the Santa Ponça area, the most populated area of the municipality and where most of the tourist facilities are concentrated.
Specifically, an area of 13,900 m2 will be remodelled over a length of 625 metres. The planned actions are aimed at the beautification of public spaces with the enlargement of landscaped areas, pavements and pedestrian areas; the improvement of water collection and management; the improvement of public lighting, and increasing energy efficiency with LED technology. The total elimination of architectural barriers and the promotion of the circular economy with the use of natural and non-industrialised materials are also foreseen.
This plan will have a budget of 2.86 million euros and SETUR’s contribution will be 33% (953,772 euros).
The other project approved by the Spanish government will be implemented in Menorca and aims to move towards a tourism model that is more in line with the sustainable development objectives of Menorca’s Biosphere Reserve.
The project will work on the transformation of the former US Army military telecommunication base, located at the top of the mountain of s’Enclusa, Ferreries, into an accessible centre for active, cultural and ecological tourism, creating a new product of tourism excellence in Menorca, differentiated and with a high added value, capable of transforming Menorcan tourism towards a more diverse, diversified and sustainable model.
This plan will have a total budget of 2 million euros and the contribution of the Secretary of State will be 666,666 euros, 33% of the total.
