The President of the Government, Francina Armengol, and the Councillor for Mobility and Housing, Josep Marí, met this Friday with the mayors of the towns in the region and representatives of the We Want the Llevant Train platform to inform them of the roadmap that the Directorate General for Mobility is working on for the reopening of this railway line.

As the President announced in the general policy debate, the 2023 budget will include 30 million euros to promote the construction of the Llevant train. And this annuity will be completed with new items to deploy the 120 million euros that the project costs.

After the meeting, Francina Armengol thanked “mayors and civil society for their constant demands to recover this project” and explained that “since we started governing in 2015 we were clear that public transport had to change drastically and that is why we made a mobility plan, electrified the entire train, promoted the Palma tram project… Without forgetting the commitment, at any time, to this region”.

Llevant train
The President of the Government stated that the Llevant train is being promoted “now that we have an adequate financial situation” and that “the idea is to begin immediately, to conserve the traditional route as much as possible and to work hand in hand with the town councils” to fulfil a “historic claim” that “does justice to the Llevant region”.

With full funding guaranteed, the works will be carried out in phases over the next four years, following the different sections into which they are divided: the urban section of Manacor, Manacor-Son Carrió, Son Carrió-Son Servera and Son Servera-Artà, as well as two branches towards the coast, towards Cala Millor and Cala Rajada, the route of which depends on the studies underway.

The resumption of the construction of the Llevant train will begin next year, 2023, with the tender and the start of work on the urban section of Manacor, for which the basic project will be definitively approved this year and the construction project will be drafted. The other three sections already have a construction project, which only needs to be updated in order to put out to tender and restart work. In the case of the two planned bypasses towards the coast, the projects are pending informative studies to determine connection routes.

In order to carry out the work, tenders will be invited for the construction projects and the work on the different sections. The financing is planned in four annual instalments so that by 2027 the entire project will be completed. At the same time, an alternative proposal to the greenway will be made to maintain the itinerary for pedestrians and cyclists as close as possible to the original route, always guaranteeing the necessary safety conditions for the operation of the railway service and for people.

The recovery of this Manacor-Artà rail corridor is part of the Mobility Master Plan approved in 2019, which foresees that this rail infrastructure will recover the historical connection between the towns of the region, while at the same time providing the opportunity to link up with the coastal areas that also need to improve their connectivity. The aim is to extend decarbonisation and sustainability policies throughout the territory through a change in the mobility model both for residents and for all those who visit us.
