September closed with 2,613,583 Social Security affiliates linked to tourism activities, surpassing the highest figure in the historical series for September, that of 2019, which represents a year-on-year growth of 10.5% and the creation of 247,852 new jobs, according to data released today by Turespaña.

The tourism sector also continues to lead job creation in our country, contributing 4 out of every 10 new affiliates and representing 13% of the total number of affiliates in the national economy.
The Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, pointed out that “the historic figure reached in September for tourism employment shows that our economy has solid foundations despite the context of uncertainty and inflation, and reinforces the role of tourism in the economic and employment recovery”.
For the Minister of Tourism, “these good employment figures reflect the impetus that the public administrations and the business sector have tackled in a determined and coordinated manner to diversify and modernise the Spanish tourism model, an agenda that is essential to continue creating jobs and improving the country’s competitiveness, and to generate confidence in travellers from all over the world so that they choose us for the variety of experiences that Spain offers and guaranteeing the best value for money”.
Branches of activity
The variation in affiliates was positive in all branches of tourism. In other tourism activities, the increase was 78,254 workers while in hotels and restaurants the increase was 164,523 (98,499 in food and beverage services and 66,024 in accommodation services). In travel agencies, the increase was 5,075 workers.
The number of employees, which represents 81.1% of the total number of workers, increased by 13% with respect to the same month of the previous year and the number of self-employed increased by 0.8%.
By Autonomous Community
In September, employment in hotels and catering and travel agencies/tour operators as a whole increased in all the Autonomous Communities. In absolute figures, the largest increases were in Andalusia, Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, the Community of Madrid and the Community of Valencia. In relative terms, the year-on-year increase in the Balearic Islands (21.3%) stands out.
