The membership process will remain open between 20 December and 20 January and will prioritise vulnerable households.

Some 40 households and six companies in the neighbourhood of El Viver (Palma) will be able to reduce their electricity bills thanks to the shared self-consumption that the Balearic Energy Institute (IBE) will set up in an apartment building belonging to the Balearic Housing Institute (IBAVI) located at Calle del Crédito Balear, 70.

The IBE, which is part of the Vice-Presidency and Regional Ministry of Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, headed by Juan Pedro Yllanes, presented the project to the residents of El Vivero on Thursday. Once it is up and running, the project will allow homes and businesses within a one-kilometre radius of the installation to be powered by the energy generated by solar panels. Thus, users who can benefit will pay per kilowatt at cost price and kilometre zero.

The Director General of Energy and Climate Change, Pep Malagrava, stressed during the presentation that “little by little, Palma is creating a network of shared self-consumption that reaches more people; it is no utopia that in a few years the city will be an example of energy sovereignty. We have to continue promoting this type of project and reach more people, especially those who most need access to renewable energy. We must continue to promote this public energy company and continue to generate clean energy, while at the same time reducing consumption. From the Govern, we will continue working to make Palma a sustainable and decarbonised space”.

The public registration procedure will be open between 20 December 2022 and 20 January 2023, and will allow the selection of individuals and companies that will be able to consume electricity from the photovoltaic installation for a period of one year, extendable up to four, at which point a new call for applications will be opened. In addition, work will be carried out with the Social Services Department of the City Council so that families from vulnerable groups can benefit from the social advantages of this project.

The project

The shared self-consumption is located in a residential building at Calle del Crédito Balear, 70 and will cost 102,340€. The company in charge of implementing this project is Sferaone Solutions & Services, SL, which obtained the highest score. This installation will save up to 49.53 tonnes of CO2/per year.

The project, located on the roof of an IBAVI residential building, will have a total power of 60 kW and will be able to reach a total of 40 homes and six businesses, thus supplying green energy at cost price to residents of Palma, giving priority to vulnerable households.

This project is in addition to the one that was also presented this Tuesday in Palma, in the neighbourhood of Es Pil-larí, the installation will be located in the street of Bernat Jofre and will also have a power of 60 kW. With these two projects, a total of 80 homes and 12 businesses will be reached, and a total of 89.72 tonnes of CO2/year in emissions will be avoided.

Both projects have been made possible thanks to the agreement signed between IBE and IBAVI, which establishes that the resources from the energy billed will be reinvested in energy efficiency improvements and building refurbishment.
