The ‘Sustainable Stand’ award at Fitur

The stand with which the Balearic Islands have attended the International Tourism Fair in Madrid (Fitur) has been distinguished with the ‘Fitur 2023 Sustainable Stand’ award. This award is granted by the fair organisers in collaboration with the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI) and aims to recognise and highlight the Balearic Islands’ efforts to make its presence at Fitur respectful of the environment and climate change, analysing its contribution to favouring social and cultural aspects, as well as its contribution to governance and economic issues. This is the second year that the Balearic Islands are recognised with the Fitur ‘Sustainable Stand’ award, as they were also awarded in the 2021 edition.

The Balearic Islands’ stand at Fitur is a newly created stand inspired by Posidonia Oceanica. The new proposal arises from the search to outline the properties of this marine plant, so characteristic of the Mediterranean, to build a different and attractive stand that reflects its colours, that is natural and that projects the image of a commitment to sustainability, so necessary for its survival.

The Balearic Islands stand at this edition of Fitur 2023 has been a stand in which sustainability has been very present throughout the construction and exhibition process:

During the design and manufacture: the use of consumables and inks has been reduced to a minimum; wood from sustainable forests labelled with the FSC certificate has been used; existing wood from the workshop has been reused as a flooring base; ecological, PVC-free textiles and materials have been used and all the stand lighting has been installed using LED or very low energy consumption.

During transport: The assembly has been planned to reduce transport volume, the use of packaging has been minimised and unnecessary journeys have been reduced to a minimum.

During assembly: Waste generation has been reduced and machinery noise has been avoided as far as possible.

During the fair: All cafeteria material comes from recycled materials and a defined area has been set aside for waste recycling. The cleaning products used are environmentally friendly.

After the fair: All materials whose structural design can be reused over time and at subsequent fairs will be reused.
All of this has been recognised by the jury for the ‘Fitur 2023 Sustainable Stand’ award. These awards are aligned with the work of the RTI and, therefore, related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
