Illes Balears

The Directorate General for Language Policy and the Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics have just reissued the publication Viure a les Illes Balears, a vocabulary in pictures that is aimed especially at newcomers to the Balearic Islands who do not yet know how to speak Catalan.

Viure a les Illes Balears is a compilation of words, accompanied by images, referring to common communicative situations in everyday life. The vocabulary is classified according to general and common areas of everyday life, with the aim of making the social, cultural and linguistic reality of the Balearic Islands known to new residents.

The publication was originally produced in 2001 by the COFUC (Consortium for the Promotion of the Catalan Language, now IEB). The new version, of which 15,000 copies have been produced, will be distributed to schools, town councils, island councils, social entities and organisations that provide language services.

This new edition presents some updates to the content and has been translated into languages that are currently widely spoken in the archipelago, such as German, English, Arabic, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. Anyone interested in having this material can send an e-mail to foment@dgpoling.caib.es to request it.
