The Public Library of Palma “Can Sales” inaugurates a Ukrainian bookshelf intended to lend to the Ukrainian community living in Mallorca. At the request of the Mallorcan Association of Aid to Ukrainian Refugees (AMAR Ukraine) and the Consulate General of Ukraine in Barcelona, the new Ukrainian language collection comes from a first acquisition made by the library, managed by the Government of the Balearic Islands, and a donation from the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.

The initiative “Bookshelf in Ukrainian”, carried out with the support of the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska, is a tool of bilateral cooperation with Ukraine for the cultural sector. It consists in a symbolic donation to a community library of a bookshelf in the national colours and a collection of about 200 books in Ukrainian. By the end of 2023, the bookshelves will be present in 45 countries worldwide.

At Can Sales, the Ukrainian book collection will be located for as long as necessary in front of the lending counter on the first floor. It will be available for consultation in the library’s online catalogue, opac.bibliotecapalma.com. For ease of reference, it will have a virtual display, with images of the book covers.

The books can be borrowed individually, either in the library itself or through interlibrary loan, since the Ukrainian community is distributed in different localities of the island. Collective lending by the various associations of the community is also foreseen.

On the occasion of the symbolic donation of the bookshelf and the presentation of the collection in Ukrainian, an inauguration has been organized with the presence and interventions of the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Jaume Bauzà, and the Consul General of Ukraine in Barcelona, Artem Vorobyov. The director of the library, the president of AMAR Ukraine and the project coordinator of the association will participate in the event. The general director of Heritage of the City Council of Palma, Pilar Ribal, the first vice-president and executive councilor of Culture and Heritage of the Consell de Mallorca, Antònia Roca, and the insular director of Culture, Guillem Ginard, will also attend.

The inauguration aims to be a symbol of cooperation with Ukraine, but also an act of support for the Ukrainian refugee community on our island, a message of solidarity through books and a starting point for sharing Ukrainian culture with the organization of different activities.

The event will take place on Wednesday, January 31 at 5.30 pm in the comic library of the Public Library of Palma Can Sales (Plaza de la Porta de Santa Catalina, 24, Palma).
