The Consell de Mallorca’s refuges closed 2023 with a record number of visitors

The mountain refuges of the Consell de Mallorca network recorded a total of 33,848 overnight stays in 2023, 23.4% more than in 2022, a record number compared to previous years.

Specifically, this represents an increase of 6,420 occupied places last year, compared to the 27,428 stays recorded in 2022. The network of shelters managed by the island institution is made up of six establishments located on public estates and offering 332 beds.

The occupancy figures for accommodation during the past year are as follows: Tossals Verds (7,185), So n’Amer (6,675), Can Boi (6,149), Muleta (5,162), Pont Romà (4,578) and Galatzó (4,099).

The busiest times of the year are spring (April and May) and autumn (October), the months with the highest occupancy rates and when the facilities are almost full. During the long weekend of the Constitution, there was a peak in overnight stays of almost 100%, almost doubling the figures recorded in the same period of the previous year.

The Second Vice President and Councilor of the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, has expressed his positive assessment of the increase in the number of hikers at the Consell de Mallorca’s network of refuges, attributing it to “the desire of people to be in contact with nature and the boom in hiking in recent years. He added: “the users of this type of accommodation, both national and international, want to get to know the Serra de Tramuntana, and they take advantage of their stays in the refuges to do some of the stages of the Ruta de Pedra en Sec”.

Difference in nationalities in low and high season

By nationality, it should be noted that Spaniards are the users who stay most often in these mountain refuges, with 45.16% of the total number of overnight stays registered in 2023, compared with 54.84% of foreign origin.

Germans (23.46%) and French (7.05%) are the most numerous nationalities. They are followed by hikers from Czechoslovakia (4.49%), the United Kingdom (3.81%), Belgium (3.67%) and Denmark (2.53%). Hikers are staying overnight in Mallorca’s refuges from a total of 58 countries.

On the origin of users who come to the shelters, Pedro Bestard has detailed that “while in low season the Spanish are the most numerous customers, in a high season many more foreigners come, especially Germans and French, so that this difference is equalized”.

It should be noted that last year 4,099 visitors were registered at the Galatzó refuge, which opened its doors in February 2023.
