The Consell de Mallorca commemorates the 8M

The Consell de Mallorca celebrates International Women’s Day with the reading of the manifesto promoted by the Govern de les Illes Balears and the rest of the island councils, which reaffirms the commitment of the institutions to demand equality. This year’s slogan “Per les dones grans, per les grans dones” (For great women, for great women) aims to make the role of these women visible and recognise the work they have done throughout their lives.

The president of the institution emphasises “the firm commitment of this government team to the development of equality policies and the fight against male violence”. Llorenç Galmés assures that “for us, it is a priority to continue working in favour of equality and the protection of the rights of all women, with special emphasis on co-responsibility and family reconciliation, which are major challenges nowadays”.

He also reiterated the importance of “women being able to decide freely what they want, without barriers or obstacles”. The President of the Consell de Mallorca concludes: “For an egalitarian world, with women and men with the same rights, today we celebrate and vindicate Women’s Day”.

The four women in charge of the reading at the Misericordia Cultural Centre are the sportswoman Dolors Besné, the scientist Isabel Moreno, the politician Francisca Bennàssar, the journalist Kika Cortès and the actress Aina Frau. These pioneering women have been the protagonists of the video “A Mallorca, dones lliures”, which has been published this week by the insular institution. They also participated as panelists in the round table of the activity “Converses amb grans dones” (Conversations with great women).

The institutional text commits to “promote measures that provide economic security to older women, guarantee their access to specialised services in cases of gender violence and discrimination, promote programmes to support their needs, recognise the social value of their work and support studies that address gender inequality in old age”.

The event is closed with the words of the President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens. There will also be musical performances: first, the duet Viocello, made up of the soprano Carme Garí and the cellist Gabriel Fiol, will give a performance accompanied by dance, and then the Establiments women’s choir will bring the event to a close.
