Pope Francis receives in audience the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés

Pope Francis receives in audience the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés. The Consell de Mallorca is kicking off the year of Saint Catherine Tomàs with a series of events in Rome and the Vatican to commemorate the 450th anniversary of the death of the only Mallorcan saint.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, accompanied by the bishop of Mallorca, Sebastià Taltavull, and the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, has conveyed to Pope Francis this anniversary which, he stresses, “must be remembered because she is the only Mallorcan saint”.

Galmés presented the Pope with a set of books that reflect on the subject: Evolució constructiva de la Catedral de Mallorca; Vida abreviada de Santa Catalina Tomassa (Ciutat de Mallorca – 1950); L’ull Viu. Tres Fotògrafs miren Barceló a la Catedral de Mallorca and La farmàcia monàstica de la Reial Cartoixa de Valldemossa. With these documents, the Consell de Mallorca aims to highlight the importance of the nun in the island’s culture and heritage and her influence over the centuries.

The events of the year of St. Catherine Tomàs continue
This Wednesday afternoon, the Mallorcan delegation will make a private visit to the Vatican Apostolic Library. The Consell de Mallorca contacted the Mallorcan librarian Victòria Eugènia Bosch to get to know this emblematic and little-known place in the Vatican. Afterwards, the bishop of Mallorca, Sebastià Taltavull, will celebrate mass in the church of Santa Maria in Monserrato.

The events continue this Thursday
The events marking the beginning of the year of Saint Catherine Tomàs continue this Thursday with an official visit to the Basilica of San Prieto in Vincoli by the Abbot General of the Lateran Canons Regular, Franco Bergamin, and the Vicar General, Edward González. The Mallorcan authorities will be able to see the chapel of Moses by Miquel Àngel and the crypt, where the chains of Saint Peter can be seen. In addition, they will also be able to enjoy a special visit that is not open to the public, such as the tomb of the Maccabees.

The Consell de Mallorca has prepared a Mallorcan ball de bot show with two pairs of Aires d’Andraitx and the performance of Tomasian pieces by a baritone. In this way, the president of the Consell de Mallorca wishes to showcase part of Mallorca’s heritage while highlighting the role played by Santa Catalina Tomàs. Finally, Llorenç Galmés will sign the book of honour of San Pietro in Vincoli.
