The commitment of the Consell de Mallorca to the Saharawi people is growing

The Consell de Mallorca reaffirms and increases its commitment to the Sahrawi people through its collaboration in the initiatives carried out by the Association of Friends of the Sahrawi People of the Balearic Islands (AAPSIB). This was stated by the president of the Consell, Llorenç Galmés, after meeting with the non-profit organisation, a meeting which was also attended by the councillor of the Presidency, Antoni Fuster, and the island’s director of Strategic Projects and Institutional Relations, Maria Elena Jaume.

For the first time, the island institution has approved an extraordinary allocation of 25,000 euros for the AAPSIB, through the Mallorcan Solidarity and Cooperation Fund. It also contributes annually, together with the local councils, 80,000 euros for the Saharawi children’s health project, through the FMS, aimed at health incentives, vaccinations and nutrition for children.

The president of the Consell maintains that “the support to the Saharawi people is a reality that is reflected in the increase of aid and in the cooperation in projects that allow an improvement of this unjust situation”. Llorenç Galmés thanks the association for its “work and constant dedication to improving the conditions of the people living in the occupied territories of Western Sahara”.

Likewise, they have announced that the island’s director of Strategic Projects and Institutional Relations will participate in the humanitarian trip organised by the association to the Saharawi refugee camps in Tindouf. The Councillor of the Presidency emphasised that, in addition to the economic collaboration, “the Consell offers the solidarity organisation its help in publicising the different activities it carries out”. At the hearing, ideas were shared for the institution to participate in the “Holidays in Peace” programme, which focuses on the reception of Saharawi children aged between 10 and 12 by families from the Balearic Islands.
