On the first Thursday of every month, the Waste and Energy Consortium and the UTE Es Milà encourage citizens to visit the facilities to learn first-hand how waste is treated in Menorca.
The Waste and Energy Consortium of Menorca and the UTE Es Milà (Prezero GR and Adalmo), in charge of the Waste Management Area of Milà, are opening a new programme of guided tours for all the citizens of the island to get to know the new Waste Treatment Plant. Anyone who wants to see first-hand how waste is managed in Menorca can sign up for the visits, which will be organised on the first Thursday of each month from 5 to 6 pm. The first visit will take place on Thursday 4th April.

The Milà Waste Treatment Plant
Until now, the visits to the Milà facilities have been aimed at groups: schools and institutes, companies, public and private entities and associations of all kinds that request them. Now the option is open to anyone interested, who will only have to register for free on the website of the Consorci de Residus i Energia de Menorca (cremenorca.org).
The visits aim to raise awareness of the new treatment plant, officially inaugurated in April 2022, as well as to raise public awareness and good separation and recycling practices by showing in situ how the different fractions arriving at the facilities are treated.
“Seeing how the plant’s machinery works and the result of the differentiated treatment of each of the fractions can raise awareness among those who are convinced that it is important to recycle, but above all it can change the conception of those who think it is not. This is one of the objectives we have with these visits: to make everyone aware of how we manage waste in Menorca and to make them feel part of this management. In short, what we want to do is to dispel false myths that greatly harm the proper management of waste,” explained the president of the Waste and Energy Consortium of Menorca, Simón Gornés.
Since its inauguration to date, more than 800 people have already been able to get to know the Milà facilities during the different visits organised.
The guided tour
The visit begins with a previous explanation of the different areas and facilities that make up the Milà Waste Management Area by the specialised staff of the UTE Es Milà and CREM. This is followed by a guided tour of the site.
The tour is carried out with the equipment in operation, so that it is possible to see how each waste fraction is worked, so it will be possible to see the type of machinery and the function it fulfils in each of the different phases of waste treatment: reception and feeding; separation according to size, density, colour and composition of the waste; and pressing for the generation of bales of the different types of waste recovered to be sent for recovery.
The visit also shows the organic matter stabilisation and refining area and the incinerator furnace. Finally, visitors can see the current landfill in operation on one of the old closed and environmentally restored cells.
