The IMAS has reinforced the staff to extend to the 365 days of the year the timetable of attention of this model of care and specialised accompaniment for people with dependency.

A dozen people already benefit from the service of integral attention at the home

Nowadays twelve people with dependency benefit from the extension of the timetable of attention to all the days of the year of the professionals of the service of integral attention at home (SAID) of the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS). Since it was announced in November, the Consell de Mallorca has worked so that the increase of hours would be effective already in the first quarter of 2024 and thus be able to attend the dependent people who require it also on weekends and holidays.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, together with the councillor of Social Welfare and president of IMAS, Guillermo Sánchez, and the island’s director of Community Care and Promotion of Personal Autonomy, Catalina Maria Mascaró, visited two of the dependent people who receive care and accompaniment at home every day of the week when they need it, on Saturday, to see how satisfied they are with the extended hours.

“We are committed to the SAID and the benefits it brings for dependent people who want to grow old at home, as well as for what it means to their families in terms of facilitating work-life balance and the possibility of having leisure time,” said Llorenç Galmés, who said that “we have worked to strengthen and extend the opening hours to weekends and public holidays to respond to a demand from the vast majority of SAID users and families, who until the beginning of the year could only be attended from Monday to Friday, except on public holidays”.

For his part, the Councillor for Social Welfare of the Consell, Guillermo Sánchez, explained that “the extension of the service will be progressive. We have started with the highest priority cases, but we will gradually increase the number of hours and will go from 13,000 hours per month in 2023 to 17,000. To ensure delivery, we have already recruited three more auxiliary nursing care technicians and, in total, there are twenty more additions planned. We want to improve care for the most vulnerable people. With this expansion, we are ensuring that they will be well cared for as long as they need”.

With this increase in staff, there are now more than 320 professionals from different specialities that make up the SAID team, which for six years has been offering social and health care and accompaniment to nearly 460 people with dependency in 39 municipalities in Mallorca, thus consolidating itself as a real alternative to the residential model.

“The growth of SAID is unstoppable, and we will make every effort to reach as many people as possible. The key to success lies in the involvement of all the staff who form part of the team and who adapt to the wishes, particularities and needs of each of the people they care for”, concluded President Galmés, who insisted that “we are and will continue to be committed to this model of professional and personalised care. We have already demonstrated this with the increase in the budget”.

Specifically, the IMAS has increased the SAID budget for 2024 by almost 1.7 million euros compared to the previous year: 1,650,000 euros already budgeted to reach 15,872,795.31 euros, 10% more than in 2023.
