New Mallorca Joven awards to promote creativity in Catalan and rondalles among schoolchildren on the island

The Consell de Mallorca presents the new Mallorca Joven literary awards: a call that aims to promote creativity in writing and strengthen language skills among students in the third and fourth years of ESO and baccalaureate of any school in Mallorca.

The call for entries has a budget of 2,400 euros and aims to raise awareness of fables among schoolchildren, which is why the works submitted must include one of the following words: aperduar, braverol, vinclar, brufar, tumbaga, gínjol, chasqueado, regiró, esplugar, tudar, vega or lecho.

The vice-president of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, has assured that one of her objectives as head of the department is to raise awareness of the island’s culture among the youngest people: “the students of Mallorca must know our roots, our language and the lexicon of the rondalles”.

Categories

There will be four categories: two for narrative and two for poetry. In narrative, there will be two prizes: Joana E., in commemoration of the novel by Maria-Antònia Oliver, to whom, by the way, the Consell de Mallorca has just dedicated a library in Binissalem, and Bearn, in recognition of Llorenç Villalonga.

As for poetry, the categories are Pi de Formentor, since next year it will be 150 years since it was written by Costa i Llobera, and Balanguera, for being the island’s official anthem.

There will be two prizes in the four competitions: 350 euros for the winning entry and 250 euros for the runner-up.

You can consult all the information on the call for entries in the BOIB (Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands).
