The Fundació Teatre Principal de Palma appoints Miquel Martorell as managing director

This Thursday, the Board of Trustees of the Fundació Teatre Principal de Palma appointed Miquel Martorell Vicens as managing director, after resolving the public competition that was launched a few months ago to fill this post.

This morning, the Vice President of the Consell de Mallorca and Councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, called an extraordinary and urgent meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Fundació Teatre Principal de Palma to report on the results of this process, which, she stressed, “was the first independent competition for the public theatre, and was carried out in a balanced manner”.

The aim, explained Roca, was to depoliticise the management of Palma’s Teatre Principal, and he assures that, with this result, this has been achieved: “the Teatre Principal’s longest-serving employee has won, with a highly technical profile, recognised prestige and a track record linked to the institution, and with an important network of international contacts”. Moreover, the Vice-President and Councillor emphasised that “Martorell specialises in his own theatre and opera productions, something that will probably mark his time at the helm of the public theatre”.

Steps to be taken

Now, once the appointment has been approved by the Board of Trustees of the Fundació Teatre Principal de Palma, the Consell de Mallorca and Miquel Martorell will begin a series of meetings to formalise the contract. It is expected to be signed at the beginning of May, which is when Martorell will take up his post. A few days before this, Miquel Martorell asked to present his master plan to all the members of the Board of Trustees so that they could see, first-hand, what the line to be followed during his term of office would be. It should be noted that the tender that has been carried out goes beyond the project for the term of office and the contract can be for a maximum of six years.

Evaluation Commission

The Evaluation Commission for the public tender was made up of three members appointed by the institutions and two members from the performing arts sector, and it should be noted that they all unanimously agreed with the proposal. The process had different stages: requirements, an assessment of merits and an assessment of the master plan presented.

Specifically, those appointed by the institutions were Fernando Gómez de la Cuesta, independent curator, critic and manager of plastic arts projects; Guillem Ginard, a politician with extensive experience in the cultural sector, and Tomeu Riera, a career civil servant and four-year administrator of the symphony orchestra. As for the sector, the members of the Evaluation Commission were Joan Fullana, playwright and stage director, and Marta Barceló, playwright and actress.

Miquel Martorell Vicens

Miquel Martorell Vicens (Palma, 1982) has a degree in Business Studies from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and in Design from the EDAA School. He also has two master’s degrees in Cultural Management and Organisational Management. He speaks four languages and has completed his training with numerous advanced courses in both technical tasks and people management.

Her links with Palma’s Teatre Principal began when she was a child, in September 1993, when she joined the Teatre Principal Choirs and its theatrical classrooms. Since then, he has been artistically linked to the institution.

With a professional career spanning over 20 years, he is currently in charge of the production area of the Fundació Teatre Principal de Palma and has worked with soloists, actors and creators of international prestige in a wide range of different disciplines. He has also worked as a costume and stage designer on several shows.

He has also collaborated with the Anuario Teatral de las Islas Baleares (Universitat de les Illes Balears) and has given classes and seminars on show production at the Instituto Puerta Bonita in Madrid; at the Comunicarte competition; at the AIDO “José Collado” master’s degree and at the Complutense Summer School of the Complutense University of Madrid. At the same time, he collaborates in different business and management projects.

He has been the president of the Association of Cultural Management Professionals of the Balearic Islands, is a collaborating alumni of the UOC, a member of the Academy of Performing Arts of Spain and actively collaborates with the cultural institutions of the Islands.
