The Government Delegation against Gender Violence

The Ministry of Equality, through the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, has updated the statistical data on women murdered presumably due to intimate partner or ex-partner violence after the last meeting with the Observatory of Domestic and Gender Violence of the General Council of the Judiciary, the Prosecutor’s Office for Violence against Women and the Ministry of the Interior, held on 5 March.

To advance in the homogenisation of figures in the different official statistics, cases from 2008 to 2023 have been analysed.

After pooling the work carried out, the Government Delegation against Gender Violence excluded four cases in 2008 which had previously been under investigation: one in A Coruña, shelved because the violent death of the victim had not been accredited; another in Las Palmas because it was not a case of gender violence; a third in Santa Cruz de Tenerife following a provisional dismissal and shelving of the case for accidental death; and the fourth in Murcia, as it was considered a suicide. The total number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners in 2008 remained at 76, while the number of cases investigated fell from five to one.

In 2009, one case previously under investigation in Cadiz was confirmed as a result of a conviction and two other cases under investigation were excluded: one in Valencia and another in Asturias, as final acquittals had been handed down. After this update, the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners in 2009 would rise to 58, instead of 57, and there would be no cases under investigation.

The review of the 2010 data confirms one case previously under investigation in Las Palmas, after the conviction of the spouse. The number of women murdered in that year by their partners or ex-partners increased from 73 to 74.

Concerning 2011, one case from the Balearic Islands, previously under investigation, has been excluded as it was not a case of gender violence. The year closed with 62 women murdered as a result of gender violence and one case under investigation, one less than before the review.

From 2012, one case previously under investigation in Barcelona was excluded, after the proceedings were provisionally dismissed. There are no changes in the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners: 51, and the number of cases under investigation goes from one to none.

As for the year 2014, two cases were confirmed as previously under investigation; one in Valencia; and another in Asturias. After this revision, the number of women murdered by gender violence in 2014 amounts to 57, two more than before the revision.

The year 2018 excludes one case previously confirmed in Barcelona after an acquittal was handed down. This means that the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners goes from 53 to 52.

This data update includes the exclusion of a case previously under investigation in Barcelona in 2020 because the autopsy did not show evidence of criminality; and another case under investigation in Valencia is confirmed, as the alleged aggressor has been charged with the crime of homicide. In this way, the number of women murdered due to gender violence in 2020 would increase from 50 to 51; and there would be no cases under investigation.

Finally, in 2023, a case previously under investigation in Barcelona has been excluded as it was not considered gender violence. In addition, a case that was under investigation in Castellón has been confirmed, and a case previously confirmed in Málaga has been placed under investigation. Thus, the number of women murdered by their partners or ex-partners remains at 58, and the number of orphans who are minors has increased from 57 to 58. There is one case under investigation.

After updating this data, the number of women murdered since 2003 due to gender violence up to the present day would be 1,253, four more than before this revision. The number of orphans or minor orphans since 2013 would amount to 443, one more than before the update. Seven cases of women killed by their partners or ex-partners are still under investigation.
