The repair of this route will provide continuity to the itinerary of the GR-221 route for its full approval as a long-distance footpath.

The Consell de Mallorca’s Department of the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports has presented the Son Cabaspre residents’ association in Esporles with the project to adapt the section of the Dry Stone Route (GR-221) that runs through this housing estate, which is not signposted at present and which is essential for it to be fully certified as a long-distance footpath.

The project to adapt the section of the Son Cabaspre path

The meeting, which took place at Esporles Town Hall, was attended by the island’s director of the Environment, Luis Rubí; the mayor of the municipality, Josep Ferrá; and representatives of the Son Cabaspre residents’ association, headed by its president, José Estévez. The coordinator of the Dry Stone and Hiking Unit, Antoni Reynés, also took part.

Luis Rubí explained that the decision to take over the management of this section, over which there is a conflict of ownership between the Town Hall and the local residents, is mainly due to the need to provide continuity to the itinerary in order to obtain the approval of the Dry Stone Route, as the entire route must be properly signposted, providing greater safety for the hikers who use it.

During the meeting, the island’s Director of the Environment explained that the management of this section of the Dry Stone Route will include the repair of the road surface and the creation of a safe area for pedestrians.

‘The reception shown by the residents of Son Cabaspre to the solution adopted by the Department of the Environment has been very positive, since the path that crosses the development will be repaired, and it will allow us to complete a basic section to provide continuity to the GR-221 Route, as a preliminary step to the approval of its entire length, from Pollença to Andratx,’ said Rubí.

Linking the Esporles – Can Boi stage

The project to adapt the section of the Son Cabaspre path covers an extension of approximately 1.5 kilometres, which runs through the municipality of Esporles, and connects the route of the Esporles – Can Boi stage.

This route begins in Esporles and ends in Deià, and the repair of the path that runs through the Son Capaspre housing estate will enable it to be signposted as part of the GR-221 Dry Stone Route. The project is currently being processed and is expected to be completed within a year and a half.

The Dry Stone Route or GR-221 is a long-distance footpath that runs longitudinally through the Tramuntana mountain range, from Port d’Andratx to the cape of Formentor. It is based on the network of old cobbled paths, many of which have been restored by the Consell de Mallorca (Mallorca Council).
