‘Cine Sénior’ programme

The second edition of Cine Sénior (Senior Cinema) kicks off on Tuesday 30 April. With this programme, people aged 65 and over can go to the cinema on Tuesdays at a reduced price of 2 euros, at any of the 420 cinemas throughout Spain that have taken advantage of the measure promoted by the Ministry of Culture. Between them, there are more than 3,000 projection screens distributed throughout the country. As a novelty with respect to the first edition, tickets can be purchased both at the ticket offices of the cinemas and by electronic means.

The continuity of the measure responds to the good results of the first edition, as well as to the Ministry of Culture’s determination to guarantee the activity of cinemas as fundamental agents in the dissemination of cultural diversity, through the recovery of attendance at cinemas by people in this age group, facilitating their right of access to cultural diversity.

20% increase in funding
The maximum allocation to finance these grants in 2024 amounts to 12 million euros, which represents an increase of 2 million euros compared to the previous call for proposals, an increase of 20%. Of the amount earmarked for grants, a maximum of 10 million euros corresponds to the granting of aid to beneficiaries, while a maximum of 1.75 million euros will be set aside to meet the possible need to increase the aid granted as a result of greater implementation than planned.

The success of the first edition
The continuation in 2024 of this measure known as ‘Cine Sénior’ responds to the positive reception of the first edition. According to FECE data, during the last campaign, Tuesday was the day of the week on which general cinema attendance increased the most. Specifically, it grew by around 50% compared to Tuesdays in the same period of the previous year: from 2.7 million total spectators on Tuesdays in 2022, to 4 million total spectators on Tuesdays in 2023. During the programme campaign, which took place between July and December, a total of 924,724 senior viewers attended, 25.5% of the total number of tickets sold.
