The natural park of sa Dragonera

The protagonist of this large mural, measuring 13 x 2.5 metres, is the Dragonera “sargantana” (Podarcis lilfordi giglioli), “sa dragoneta”, the small endemic lizard that is so emblematic of the Natural Park.

This is an environmental education initiative that is part of the European ‘Progress’ project, in which 12 primary school pupils have taken part in a responsible photography workshop in collaboration with MARE, the Audiovisual Contest for the Conservation of the Balearic Sea.

The vice-president and councillor for the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard, “congratulated the participating students”, and highlighted the message that this mural should represent, which has been created “combining environmental education, with photography and art, to promote responsible behaviour among young people in their relationship with the environment”.

The process of making the mural

The project began on 27 February when a technician from the Natural Park and one from MARE came to the school to explain the initiative. Afterwards, the 12 students who worked on the creation of the mural went to sa Dragonera, where they took all the photographs that were later used to make the mural, which, after being printed on paper, was stuck to the wall of the pier.

MARE created different mural options and the students chose the one that resulted in a large-scale mural that can be seen as soon as one arrives at the port.

Photography as a tool for getting to know the sea

The Audiovisual Contest for the Conservation of the Balearic Sea (MARE) has been working since 2020 to bring to light, through the public, the state of our waters. MARE uses photography as a tool capable of moving, captivating and connecting us with the sea. It shows us, with privileged eyes, its beauty and its threats.
