425,000 euros to the promotion of culture

The Consell de Mallorca earmarks 425,000 euros to promote the island’s culture. This Thursday, the plenary of the island’s institution approved a total of seven nominative subsidies for different organisations and associations on Mallorca. Specifically, a total of 191,000 euros are earmarked for the promotion of the island’s own language through different entities such as the Obra Cultural Balear, Joves de Mallorca per la Llengua, the Gremi de Llibreters de Mallorca and the Associació d’Escriptors en Llengua Catalana.

In addition, the Consell de Mallorca is also committed to the conservation of some of Mallorca’s most valuable archives, such as those of the Biblioteca de la Real and the Biblioteca Diocesana de Mallorca. A sum of 150,000 euros and 25,000 euros respectively has been earmarked to digitise the most emblematic documents in their archives. The vice-president and councillor of Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, has highlighted, for example, that the library of the Monastery of La Real has been reopened to the public thanks to the agreement that has been established between the Consell de Mallorca, the Universitat de les Illes Balears and the monastery. This archive contains works by Ramon Llull from the 16th to the 18th century and thousands of monographs and manuscripts on Balearic subjects.

In this line of protection of cultural heritage, it should be remembered that a few days ago the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, announced that in 2024 the amount allocated to the Lluc Sanctuary for the conservation and digitisation of its historic archive has been doubled, rising from 35,000 to 70,000 euros.

Finally, the plenary session of the insular institution today also approved the nominative subsidy for the Teatro de Mar, with 60,000 euros, for the promotion and dissemination of the performing arts.
