These awards, presented by the Environmental Quality and Education Service, highlight actions that contribute to a circular and cleaner economy, as well as the achievement of responsible consumption and production.

The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment, through the Environmental Quality and Education Service of the Directorate General for the Natural Environment and Forestry Management, presented the EMAS and Ecolabel labels this lunchtime to companies and organisations in the Balearic Islands for their commitment to protecting and conserving the environment. The director general of Natural Environment and Forestry Management, Anna Torres, who presided over the ceremony, stressed that “the achievement and maintenance of these environmental quality registers and eco-labels, regulated by European regulations, underline the effort and commitment of the companies and organisations that opt for them, whether through the EMAS environmental management system as a mechanism for the continuous improvement of their environmental behaviour, or through the European eco-label, Ecolabel, as a reference for the sustainability of their products or services”.

In this way, the main objective is to recognise companies that have renewed or registered for the first time in the EMAS Register of the Balearic Islands and those that have renewed or obtained the European Ecolabel during the years 2022 and 2023.

The entities recognised with the EMAS label in 2022 and 2023 are the following: Capdepera Town Council (beach management), Sant Antoni de Portmany Town Council (beach management), Cafeteria The Guinness House-Parc de la Mar, BQ Alcudia Sun Village Hotel, Platges de Capdepera SL, Puerto Portals, Viva Hotels & Resorts, Marina Port de Mallorca, Gráficas Planisi, Alcudiamar, Brillosa, Green Garden Aparthotel, PortBlue Club Pollentia Resort &Spa, La Quinta Menorca by PortBlue, Hotel Bonsol, Marina Palma Cuarentena, Varadero Ibiza, Club de Vela Port d’Andratx and Palma Pictures SL. On the other hand, those with an Ecolabel licence for interior cleaning services are the Ecolabel service departments of Mitie Facilites Services, enEquip and Brillosa.

Currently, a total of 64 entities (46 in the Balearic Islands and 18 in other autonomous communities) are listed in the EMAS register of the Balearic Islands. The three most represented activities correspond to tourist establishments, air passenger transport or related activities and, in last place, the management of marine.

It should be remembered that entities with EMAS-certified environmental management systems, and also those with a European Ecolabel, actively contribute to the achievement of responsible consumption and production and to the development of a circular economy. In this sense, they are committed to a voluntary instrument of the European Union to improve environmental performance and, therefore, they have an environmental policy that is available to staff and the general public, as is the environmental statement validated by an independent verifying entity. In this way, they carry out an exercise in transparency that is recognised by all stakeholders, including public administrations.

With reference to the Ecolabel, there are 12 European ecolabels registered in the Balearic Islands, corresponding to 106 products or centres. Specifically, cleaning services and products account for most of the labels processed. Having the European eco-label certifies compliance with environmental quality standards regulated at European level. In addition, it also allows you to contribute to the objectives of a circular and clean economy and an environment free of toxic substances.
