The participating exhibition project is Paisaje con caballo, by Catalina Julve, curated by Marta Mantecón.

The ARTE SANTANDER 2024 fair, which takes place from 12 to 16 July in Santander, Spain, is a contemporary art fair with an established tradition and is celebrating its 32nd edition this year. The participating galleries and projects are selected for their curatorial risk and international scope, which together constitute a very interesting and diverse showcase of current art.

The Instituto de Estudios Baleáricos (IEB) and ARTE SANTANDER have a collaboration agreement to programme a solo exhibition of a Balearic artist on their shelves at the fair. Continuing this agreement, the IEB has launched an open call to select an exhibition project.

This year the winning project, Paisaje con caballo, by Catalina Julve, curated by Marta Mantecón, has been selected by the selection committee, made up of the fair’s director, Mónica Álvarez Careafa, and Carmen Quijano, curator and head of mediation at the fair.

This project brings together works of recent creation, produced during the artist’s stay at the Portuguese pencil factory Viarco, in São João da Madeira, thanks to the New Talent Prize for Drawing awarded to her at the Drawing Room Lisbon & Viarco fair in 2023, where she participated with the works exhibited in the Balearic Islands Focus, produced by the IEB. The proposal presents drawings of different formats made with coloured pencils and graffiti, as a result of the process of exploration with the tools and materials made available to the artist by Viarco.

Paisaje con caballo (Landscape with horse) is an exercise in introspection by the artist, who seeks with this project the landscape and cultural references of her stay in the north of Portugal.

Parallel to the fair, on 15 and 16 July, the XI Encuentro de Coleccionismo, Arte Contemporáneo y Sociedad: Profesionalización del Arte Contemporáneo (11th Meeting on Collecting, Contemporary Art and Society: Professionalisation of Contemporary Art) will be held. It has a public-private collaboration and is organised jointly with the Instituto de Arte Contemporáneo (IAC) and the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP).

The director of the Institute of Balearic Studies (IEB), Llorenç Perelló, who will attend the opening of ARTE SANTANDER 2024, says that “the participation of Catalina Julve, together with the IEB, in Arte Santander 2024, is a great opportunity to give visibility to the artists of the Balearic Islands and their work”.
