Outpatient consultations also increased compared to 2023

Surgical operations programmed in public hospitals in the Balearic Islands have increased by 717 in May of this year compared to the same period last year. Specifically, 23,251 operations were performed in May 2024, compared to the 22,534 registered in the previous month of May. This increase represents a 3% increase in programmed surgical activity.

About specialist consultations, hospitals recorded a total of 185,627 first consultations in May this year, a figure that represents an increase of 1.8% compared to the 182,103 recorded in the same period in 2023.

In this regard, the Health Service has been working for months on different lines of action to improve waiting lists, such as increasing routine activity. The Health Service’s Healthcare Department stresses that since the introduction of the measures of the Comprehensive Waiting List Plan, thanks to the efforts of all the professionals involved in its management, it has managed to improve the indicators from which it started in December 2023.

These results are the result of the coordinated work of all professionals (not only healthcare professionals) involved in the management of the lists, including the various hospital and primary care departments, the heads and co-ordinators of the medical and surgical departments, the admissions services and the management and services professionals.

In addition, the Healthcare Directorate also highlights the work carried out by the hospital emergency services, which collaborated with the operating theatres. In this sense, they have worked intensively, collaborating and enabling the objectives set to be achieved, which have had an impact on improving patient accessibility to healthcare resources, with excellent involvement and professionalism at times of great pressure on care.
