Consell and Govern to invest 24 million euros in actions for the energy transition between 2024 and 2027

The Consell Insular de Menorca has made public, the actions planned in infrastructures for the energy transition on the island between 2024 and 2027. The investment amounts to a total of €19,699,813.93 distributed with actions in all the municipalities of Menorca for the installation of photovoltaic, storage batteries and electric vehicle charging points to continue to make progress in meeting the targets set by the Menorca 2030 Strategy. These investments are in addition to those planned by the Balearic Government on the island, which for the period 2024-2026 will amount to €3,990,837. In total, almost 24 million euros over the next few years in energy transition actions in Menorca.

The figures were presented by the councillor for the Environment, Biosphere Reserve and Cooperation, Simón Gornés, accompanied by the director general of Circular Economy, Energy Transition and Climate Change of the GOIB, who presented the part corresponding to the autonomous government.

“With these investments, we maintain a firm commitment to the decarbonisation of the island, widely agreed in Menorca, working to achieve more objectives of the Menorca 2030 Strategy and focusing on some of the aspects so far less developed, such as the issue of green energy storage, but also promoting renewable generation. With these actions, urban generation will have exceeded the 30 MW initially planned for 2030 by 2027”, explained Simón Gornés.

Actions in photovoltaics, storage and EVs

In terms of photovoltaic energy, Consell Insular has planned to install more than 9MWp in pergolas in car parks and on the roofs of public buildings for self-consumption and the creation of local energy communities. These installations will make it possible to continue reducing the electricity consumption of the island’s public facilities, with the consequent economic savings and reduction of emissions, by consuming and sharing renewable energy. The new infrastructures will be added to the 4.5 MWp already installed for these uses.

Linked to photovoltaic, the Consell has decided to expand the storage capacity and management of renewable energy, an aspect less developed on the island so far. The plan is to implement 18 MWh of energy management capacity using batteries associated with publicly owned generation and self-consumption facilities already in operation or planned.

About the electric vehicle charging network, the Consell will continue to expand the number of points on the island to reach 2030 with sufficient charging capacity to be able to provide a guaranteed service to an electrified vehicle fleet that could represent 50% of mobility on the island. The planned extension of the recharging network, following the guidelines set out in the EV Recharging Point Network Development Plan, foresees the installation of new points and the renovation of obsolete ones, incorporating the recharging of motorbikes and other vehicles, to go from the current 50 double points (100 recharging places) to a total of 168 points and 444 recharging places by 2027.

According to estimates, the facilities envisaged will generate 12,477 MWh/year once they are in operation and will avoid the emission of 5,704 tonnes of CO2 per year. The calculated annual savings for the public administration thanks to self-consumption will be 1,532,928.65 €.

Projects of the Balearic Energy Institute

The Balearic Government, through the actions planned by the Balearic Energy Institute, will also be a key player in the energy transition in Menorca. The bulk of the IBE’s actions to date have been earmarked for the installation of roofs and pergolas on public buildings belonging to the autonomous administration, such as health centres, institutes and the Mateu Orfila hospital, with the largest self-consumption installation on the island. The nearly 4 million investment of the actions planned until 2026 will also be allocated to photovoltaics, highlighting the placement of solar panels in several sewage treatment plants on the island.

“Menorca is and must continue to be a reference for the rest of the world as a Biosphere Reserve. The Government maintains and is committed to Menorca so that this continues to be so, being an example for all. In energy transition alone, the Government, through the Balearic Energy Institute, has more than 4 million euros in investments aimed at facilitating self-consumption in public buildings and another million euros is available to citizens to obtain cheaper and decentralised energy. In total, we are planning 19 installations with more than 2,800 kW of power,” said Diego Víu.
