The coastal cleaning boats of the Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle have collected a total of 6,701.83 kilograms of waste in the Balearic Islands during July, with a daily average of 216.19 kilos. This cleaning campaign has continued with the collaboration of beach and coastal boats, which have managed to keep the coastal waters free of waste as far as possible.

By islands, Mallorca led the collection with a total of 3,547.48 kilos (daily average of 114.43 kilos), followed by Menorca with 1,613.73 kilos (daily average of 52.06 kilos), Eivissa with 1,299.23 kilos (daily average of 41.91 kilos) and Formentera with 241.40 kilos (daily average of 7.79 kilos).

In total, beach-type boats collected 4,184.13 kilos of waste, with a daily average of 134.97 kilos. On the other hand, the coastal-type boats collected 2,517.70 kilos, with a daily average of 81.22 kilos.

Plastic was the predominant waste, representing 50.84% of the total, followed by wood with 30.56% and vegetation with 8.43%.

During this month, various special collections have also been carried out to deal with exceptional situations. In Mallorca, several drifting boats, a cow and a Portuguese caravel were removed. In Menorca, several trunks were collected and a concentration of plastic was managed. In Eivissa, organic material and several sticks were removed, while in Formentera the remains of a boat were found and hydrocarbons were dispersed.

It is worth mentioning that, during July, little presence of jellyfish has been detected in the bathing areas, with the collection of a single unit of Portuguese carabela in the south of Mallorca.

In total, the Conselleria del Mar y del Cicle del Agua has attended five warnings during this period, three of which were managed in collaboration with the emergency service 112 and Maritime Rescue, while two were reported by institutions and individuals.

The clean-up campaign will continue until 30 September, to keep the waters of the Balearic coast free of waste.
