The Spanish delegation is made up of 139 athletes with disabilities and 11 support athletes, who will participate in 16 disciplines.

The Spanish Paralympic team, made up of 150 athletes, is ready for the Paris 2024 Games, which kick off this week. Last night, together with the rest of the delegation, they met at the Montmartre House Museum in the French capital for a reception organised by the Spanish Paralympic Committee. The Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sport, Pilar Alegría, spoke at the event, highlighting the strength of the delegation and emphasising the Government’s commitment to equality and inclusion.

For this reason, last March Alegría announced the equalisation of medal awards between Olympic and Paralympic athletes, which will materialise thanks to an increase of 1,025,000 euros compared to 2021 (54% more) in the Government’s subsidy to the Spanish Paralympic Committee in the run-up to Paris 2024.

‘From the Government, we have worked hard to give our elite athletes all the support in this cycle,’ he said in his speech. ‘Equal opportunities, integration and the promotion of physical activity for people with disabilities, apart from these Games, are objectives of our Sports Law and a commitment we are going to continue working on’.

In the fight for medals, there will be 139 Spanish athletes (plus 11 support athletes), who will compete in 16 of the 22 disciplines in competition. They will be accompanied by 109 coaches, doctors, physiotherapists and other staff to make up the 259-strong delegation.

It is the second team with the highest number of women, with 54 athletes (38%), second only to that of the Barcelona 92 Paralympic Games. This ‘reflects significant progress in the inclusion and visibility of women with disabilities in sport,’ said Alegría. ‘There are still hurdles to overcome, but I think we are on the right track.

The opening ceremony of the Games will take place this afternoon at the Place de la Concorde. The Spanish flag bearers will be judoka Marta Arce and table tennis player Álvaro Valera. They will be followed by the rest of the Spanish Paralympic team, who will start their participation tomorrow in the swimming pool of Paris La Défense Arena.
