The Emblemàtics Balears programme for the protection of local commerce grows with 16 more establishments

The municipality of Santa Eugènia joins Emblemàtics Balears for the first time with the incorporation of the Vinya Taujana winery. As a result, there are now 32 municipalities throughout the Balearic Islands. Palma is the town with the greatest increase in new businesses, with 11 more establishments, including Antiga Casa Capó, Can Jaume Artesans, Cristalería MAC, Es Sabater, Floristeria La Rosaleda, Floristeria Miquel Capellà, Forn Ca l’Amo en Pep, Forn de Ca Sa Camena, Joyería Bitla, Juguetería Sandros and Muebles Nicolau. On the other hand, Algaida adds 2 new establishments with Bodega Oliver Moragues and Forn de Sa Creu. Finally, Botiga Son Poca Palla and Forn de Ca n’Amer are added to the emblematic establishments in Llucmajor.

The Emblemàtics Balears project arose from the need to protect local commercial activity and, more specifically, that of the most traditional establishments in the municipalities. One of the objectives of this project is to publicise the uniqueness of each municipality through its emblematic establishments.

The main sectors of the establishments that already have the emblematic commerce insignia are food, household equipment, clothing and accessories, followed by crafts, haberdashery and footwear. By categories, 210 shops are classified as historic, with more than 75 years of life or exceptionally after 50 years; 186 with roots, with a singular product or trade; 46 with heritage, with outstanding interior and exterior heritage elements, as well as with intangible value, and 102 shops have the category of emblematic, which means that the establishment meets all three of the above.

The municipalities that already have listed establishments are Alaró (4), Alcúdia (7), Algaida (7), Artà (7), Binissalem (15), Campos (16), Consell (6), Esporles (5), Felanitx (12), Inca (14), Lloseta (7), Llucmajor (12), Manacor (25), Marratxí (12), Palma (83), Pollença (9), Porreres (8), Santa Eugènia (1), Santa Maria del Camí (15), Santanyí (7), sa Pobla (7), Selva (1), Sineu (8), Alaior (5), Ciutadella (14), es Mercadal (1), Ferreries (11), Maó (30), Santa Eulària des Riu (5), Sant Josep de sa Talaia (5), Vila (11) and Formentera (8).

The platform used to publicise the project is the website www.emblematicsbalears.es, which is growing as more municipalities join the project. The Emblemàtic website provides information on the history of all the businesses, as well as their main details. It is available in Catalan, Spanish and English, as the aim is also to reach the public outside the Islands so that the emblematic shops can be a tourist attraction and can promote the rest of the municipality’s commercial fabric.
