Mallorca leads the collection with a total of 3,093.58 kilos, followed by Menorca with 2,182.38, Eivissa with 1,700.85 and Formentera with 318.33 kilos.

The coastal cleaning boats of the Department of the Sea and Water Cycle have collected a total of 7,295.13 kilograms of waste in the Balearic Islands during August, with a daily average of 235.33 kilos. The clean-up campaign continued with the collaboration of beach and coastal boats, which worked to keep the waters free of waste as far as possible.

By islands, Mallorca led the collection with a total of 3,093.58 kilos (daily average of 99.79 kilos), followed by Menorca with 2,182.38 kilos (daily average of 70.40 kilos), Eivissa with 1,700.85 kilos (daily average of 54.87 kilos) and Formentera with 318.33 kilos (daily average of 10.27 kilos).

In total, beach-type boats collected 4,388.55 kilos of waste, with a daily average of 141.57 kilos, while coastal-type boats collected 2,906.58 kilos, with a daily average of 93.76 kilos.

Plastic was the predominant waste, representing 44.13% of the total, followed by wood with 29.66% and vegetation with 12.33%.

During August, many special collections were also carried out to address exceptional situations. In Mallorca, the remains of a burnt and sunken ship were collected. In Menorca, a concentration of plastic was dealt with, and an unknown metallic artefact and a cane were collected. In Eivissa, pieces of fibre from sinking and several logs were removed. In Formentera, the remains of stranded boats were found, a log and fuel was dispersed.

It is worth mentioning that, during this month, little presence of jellyfish has been detected in the bathing areas, and no Portuguese Carabela has been collected in the islands.

In total, the Regional Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle has attended to eight warnings during this period, of which five were managed in collaboration with the 112 emergency services and Maritime Rescue, and three were reported by institutions and individuals.

The clean-up campaign will continue until 30 September, to keep the waters of the Balearic coast free of waste.
