The opera by G. B. Pergolesi will be performed this Wednesday at the National Theatre of the Croatian capital.

The Teatre Principal’s opera production La serva padrona will be performed next Wednesday 18 September at the National Theatre of Zagreb as part of the Croatian capital’s Opera Festival.

La serva padrona will be staged by Ana Cuéllar and performed by soloists Irene Mas, Simón Orfila, and actor Joan Servera. In the Zagreb performance, Pavao Mašić will conduct the Hrvatski barokni ansambl (Croatian Baroque Ensemble).

Teatre Principal’s production La serva padrona, at the Zagreb Opera Festival

This opera is a production by Palma’s Teatro Principal that premiered in July 2021 at the Teatre des Born in Ciutadella and was also performed that same month in the Fila U Festival, which was held in Palma.

This performance of La serva padrona in Zagreb results from the intense international work and collaboration of the Teatre Principal with other European theatres through opera forums such as Opera Europa.

La serva padrona is one of history’s most famous and performed short operas. Originally written as an ‘intermezzo’ to the serious opera Il prigioner superbo by the same composer, the opera soon became independent and toured Europe.

G. B. Pergolesi’s little comic opera created a great stir and triggered a musical revolution in the 18th century, known as the Querelle des Bouffons, which changed the course of the history of Western opera. Almost three hundred years later, La serva padrona continues to entertain and captivate audiences of all kinds.

Maintaining this revolutionary and transgressive spirit of the work, the show proposes a contemporary and feminist reading of the opera, which, playing with historical ambiguity, talks about the invisible work of women, in particular housework.
