More places and new studies on all the islands for the 2024-2025 vocational training course starting on Friday
As mentioned above, the number of vocational training teachers has increased by 110, of which 86 are to respond to the new vocational training law and will be responsible for improving attention to students’ training practices. It should be remembered that this year the number of hours for tutoring students who will do training in companies has doubled.
The councillor Antoni Vera pointed out that ‘this academic year 24-25 also stands out because all vocational training will be dual, that is to say, students will be able to do their training in a company from the first year’. The Department of Education and Universities is responsible for managing the 14,000 students who are expected to be registered with Social Security, twice as many as last year.
Places and training on offer
This year, more than 20,000 students will study one of the 113 vocational training cycles in 23 professional families. It should be remembered that the enrolment process for vocational training is still open and the number of students is expected to be slightly higher than last year. This figure confirms the consolidation of these studies for both families and companies, which are increasingly relying on vocational training students to find qualified workers.
The training will be given in 56 secondary schools (IES), 11 integrated vocational training centres (CIFP), 18 subsidised centres and 5 adult education centres (CEPA). The enrolment process is still open and on Friday, 20 September, the deadline for requesting an appointment to allocate vacant places is Friday 20 September. In October, enrolment for professional certificates will open.
By islands, the number of places available is as follows:
In Mallorca, 10,650 places are offered, 308 more than the previous academic year.
In Menorca, 1,205 places, 36 more.
In Eivissa, 1,480, 111 more.
On Formentera, 107, 15 more.
New offer
This year’s offer has been expanded, with a total of 30 new cycles (29 cycles and 1 specialisation course), 3 of which are new cycles that have never before been offered on the islands:
In Mallorca, the Higher Degree in Organisation and Control of Construction Works is offered, which will be taught at the Politècnic.
In Menorca, the IES Josep Maria Quadrado incorporates a Basic Grade cycle in Repair and Repair of Textile and Leather Articles.
In Eivissa, the CIFP Can Marines will offer an intermediate-level course in Recreational Boat Maintenance Technician in intensive dual mode, which has been in great demand for years in the nautical sector.
In addition, a new specialisation course has been added at CIFP Juníper Serra in the maintenance and safety of hybrid and electric vehicles, which is integrated into the general vocational training offer.
Management of professional certificates
One of the main new features of this academic year is the change in the management of vocational certificates in public centres, which were previously managed by the SOIB and, from this academic year onwards, educational vocational certificates will be managed directly by the Regional Ministry of Education and Universities. The rest of the certificates will continue to be managed by the SOIB. A total of 2,038 students will be able to benefit from this new management. The Regional Ministry of Education and Universities will manage a total of 136 vocational certificates, 49 new ones.
More support for basic vocational training
Councillor Vera highlighted the increase in support resources to deal with diversity, with AL teachers (hearing and language teachers), PT teachers (specialised in special education) and guidance counsellors, in centres that have two or more groups of basic vocational training. Twenty schools will benefit from this measure, which will have a total of 8 additional teachers.
In addition, the Projecte parlam català, a programme that promotes exchanges between centres in the Catalan-speaking territories for basic vocational training students, has been extended.
Intensive Dual Vocational Training
The Regional Ministry of Education and Universities is firmly committed to the intensive dual mode, which this year will have 113 more places available than last year, bringing the total number of places to 574. In this type of vocational training, students, in addition to doing more hours of training in companies, will receive financial remuneration and will be employed like any other worker.
More ATECA classrooms
The ATECA classrooms are technological spaces that bring students closer to working environments and which have resources specific to each production sector, using simulators and other technological elements.
The ATECA classrooms began to be implemented during the 2020-2021 academic year. Since then and up to the last academic year, 22 ATECA classrooms had been set up. This year’s students will have 15 more ATECA classrooms at their disposal: 11 in Mallorca, 2 in Menorca and 2 in Eivissa.
Even so, the Regional Minister of Education has pointed out that the Regional Ministry will not neglect the more traditional training options, such as the case of the pedra en sec (dry stone) professional certificate.
The most popular courses
During the admission process for vocational training in the Balearic Islands, the most sought-after families were: physical and sporting activities, hotel and catering and tourism, personal image, image and sound, IT and communications, maritime and fishing, health and socio-cultural and community services.
In the INTERMEDIATE GRADE cycles, two cycles coincide as the most sought-after: guidance in the natural environment and leisure time, and auxiliary nursing care.
Finally, as for the HIGHER GRADE cycles, the most demanded families are:
In Mallorca: health, socio-cultural and community services, and physical and sports activities.
In Eivissa: sociocultural services, computing and communications, maritime-fishing, and administration and management.
In Menorca: sociocultural services, computing and communications, physical and sporting activities, and administration and management.
It is worth noting that the Infant Education cycle is the one with the most applications and the one that is present on the three largest islands, occupying first place in Mallorca and Menorca.
Improving infrastructures
The Councillor for Education and Universities, Antoni Vera, recalled that the commitment of his team and of the entire Government of the Balearic Islands is for this to be the legislature of vocational training.
To achieve this, it is necessary to invest in the construction of new infrastructures and the improvement of existing ones. Immediately, the Regional Ministry of Education and Universities will begin construction of the new CIFP Ciutadella, which has already been put out to tender for 3,842,536.94 euros. This new centre, which will be located in the old maritime station of Ciutadella, will house a total of eight cycles of the hotel and catering and tourism families and will allow the start of the offer of food industries. The new CIFP is expected to offer the basic degrees of Baking and Pastry and Cooking and Catering Activities, the intermediate degrees of Catering Services, Cooking and Gastronomy Technician and Baking, Pastry and Confectionery Technician, and the higher degrees of Cookery Management, Tourist Accommodation Management and Tourist Guide, Information and Assistance.
In addition to the CIFP in Ciutadella, the VET infrastructure plan also foresees the construction of 9 more integrated vocational training centres: 6 in Mallorca, 2 more in Menorca and 1 in Eivissa.
Major reforms will also be carried out, such as the one planned for the Palma Polytechnic, which will cease to be an IES and will become a CIFP, and for the Francesc de Borja Moll (Palma), Pere de Son Gall (Llucmajor) and Pau Casesnoves (Inca) integrated vocational training centres. In addition, the CIFP Can Marines (Eivissa) and the IES Son Pacs (Palma), among others, are scheduled for expansion.
