The Government declares 2025 Josep Maria Llompart Year in the Balearic Islands

With this agreement, the Balearic Government reaffirms its intention to pay tribute to one of the most important intellectuals of the 20th century, a civic reference in the movement for the normalisation of Catalan, and to recognise his contribution to the enrichment of Catalan culture.

Josep Maria Llompart de la Peña (Palma, 23 May 1925 / Palma, 28 January 1993) began his activity as a writer in the 1940s, and during the 1970s and 1980s, at the height of his literary fecundity, he began his career as a translator.

In addition, from 1969 to 1972, he taught Catalan literature and culture at the Palma branch of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Barcelona. In 1987 he returned to teaching as an associate lecturer at the University of the Balearic Islands until 1991, when he retired.

As an activist, it should be noted that, during the 1960s, he took part in many civic activities in opposition to the Franco regime, including the Poetry, Theatre and Novel Classrooms of the Casa Catalana de Mallorca. Furthermore, in 1962 he participated in the founding of the Obra Cultural Balear, of which he was president from 1976 to 1983.
