The Government closed the 1st Forum on the Circular Economy and Waste Management, which addressed the regulatory and technical challenges in this area

The Regional Ministry of Enterprise, Employment and Energy, through the Directorate General for the Circular Economy, Energy Transition and Climate Change, took part in the 1st Balearic Islands Forum on the Circular Economy and Waste Management, promoted by the Foundation for the Circular Economy with the support of the Government of the Balearic Islands, which was held on 10 and 11 October at the Palau de Congressos in Palma.

The Forum brought together experts, waste managers and those responsible for public administrations in order to address the current challenges in waste management and move towards meeting European objectives in terms of sustainability and the circular economy.

Councillor Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro closed the conference by reiterating the Government’s commitment, stressing: ‘Two of our main objectives as a Government are sustainability and the circular economy, not only to meet the ambitious objectives of the European Union, but also because of our island reality. We have to be more efficient, smarter and more creative in waste management.

He added: ‘We know that, to solve a problem, we first have to identify it and measure its proportions to respond to it. It’s the same with waste: we have to collect, measure and plan. Precisely, we have launched the Digital Waste Processing Plan 2024-2027 with a budget of 1.9 million euros and with an execution forecast for 2026’.

Sáenz de San Pedro also stressed the importance of raising awareness and sensitising citizens, companies and public administration to generate less waste and reduce emissions.

In addition, today Diego Viu, Director General of Circular Economy, Energy Transition and Climate Change, attended the Forum and participated in the round table that analysed the regulations and objectives of the European Union.
