The service of private detectives infiltrated in operations against illegal transport continues to work throughout these days with actions that, so far, have resulted in five pirate taxi drivers being denounced. These are special operations in which the Transport inspectors of the Consell Insular de Ibiza take part, with the collaboration of agents from the Guardia Civil’s USECICO unit.

Of the five pirate taxi drivers reported, one of them was arrested by USECICO because he had a warrant for gender violence and was also using a stolen vehicle as a pirate taxi. Another was arrested for drug possession.

The island’s Director of Transport, Roberto Algaba, recalled that the operations with detectives is an initiative that was launched for the first time this summer and that the good results obtained have allowed the Department of Transport to evaluate the possibility of putting the service out to tender for next season.

The dissuasive nature of this measure has been evident: just a few days after the private detectives infiltrated the groups recruiting clients from the pirate taxi drivers, they warned the participants of the presence of detectives and generated such mistrust that they asked the illegal drivers to be ‘prudent’, which led to a significant drop in illegal transport services.

The Department of Transport recalls that it has proposed to the Government to incorporate important new features into the Law on Administrative Simplification, which is currently being processed, in order to put pressure on those who operate illegal taxis. Thus, the fine for illegal taxis will rise from 6,000 to 15,000 euros, 100% of the fine must be paid for the vehicle to be returned and if it is not paid within the time limit the vehicle will go straight to scrap metal, there will be a fine for attracting clients in Whatsapp groups, and town councils will also fine illegal taxi activity.

These five illegal taxi drivers are in addition to the nine taxi drivers who were already denounced for illegal transport in the previous operation that also incorporated the infiltrated detectives.
