The towns plan 293 improved or new sports facilities thanks to the 12 million provided by the Consell de Mallorca
The local councils, which have already officially informed the institution of their projects, plan 293 actions in the coming years in sports facilities, 81% of which are reforms, extensions or improvements, and 19% newly created spaces. The aim is to promote physical activity and increase the quality of sports facilities in municipalities, where there is an increasing demand for this type of space.
The second vice-president and councillor of the Department of the Environment, Rural Affairs and Sports, Pedro Bestard; the island’s director of Sports, Toni Prats, and technicians from the sports area of the Consell de Mallorca, have met with the mayors in Tirme to inform them of the amount that has been granted and the steps to be taken from now on to approve and sign the agreement.
Councillor Bestard pointed out that ‘this large grant, the largest in recent years, responds to the demands of many local councils who have asked us for financial support to promote their sports projects’. He added that ‘the aim is to collaborate with Mallorca’s local bodies to increase the quality and quantity of public sports facilities on the island’.
As for the distribution of the amounts, a fixed amount of €115,384 is envisaged for each town hall, while the rest will be granted in proportion to the number of inhabitants of each municipality.
Paddle tennis and football, the most renewed sports
Of the 293 projects that the local entities have presented to the Consell de Mallorca, 24% of the applications are for equipment, that is to say, material to develop sports activities, headed by video scoreboards. Seventeen per cent will be reformed in complementary spaces, such as changing rooms; 14 per cent will be reforms of pavements and 10 per cent will be transformed into improvements for energy efficiency, a growing trend, with the renovation of lighting, mainly.
In terms of new infrastructures, Mallorca will have 32 new courts or grass pitches. In terms of sports, paddle tennis accounts for a notorious 50% of the actions to be carried out, being the sport with the highest growth in demand for spaces.
