The Government of the Balearic Islands expresses its condolences for the death of Demetrio Peña, winner of the 2006 Ramon Llull Prize

Born in Vélez-Rubio (Andalusia) in 1939, he was a well-known businessman in the commerce sector. A great promoter of the associative movement among the Balearic Islands’ business community, he founded PIMEM, an association that he chaired from 1977 to 1989. During this period, he was particularly proud of the creation of the Deixalles Foundation, 50% owned by the Bishopric of Mallorca and 50% by PIMEM. For this initiative and others, such as the ‘No les llancis’ campaigns, he is considered a pioneer in the introduction and promotion of recycling in Mallorca.

From the Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises, he launched the publications Informativo PIMEM (1979), and the one specialising in economics, Salmon – later called Eurosalmon -, in which he was a regular contributor.

He was also president of PIME Baleares between 1989 and 1992. From 1986 until he retired, he was the president of the Association of Small and Medium Commerce of Mallorca (PIMECO).
