The Hospital Universitario Son Espases begins the comprehensive refurbishment of the first six operating theatres
While the refurbishment was being carried out, the technological part was relocated to other areas and a contingency plan was put in place to minimise the impact of the works on patients. In addition, complex logistical planning was carried out and double circuits were designed so as not to affect care, which was made possible thanks to the work of all the professionals involved.
In this operation, priority was given to complex procedures and the number of morning and afternoon surgical sessions was increased in order to operate on oncology patients, preferential patients and those who had been awaiting surgery for more than 180 days. In addition, low-complexity and low-priority procedures have been referred to other collaborating centres, and complex operations have been performed in the major outpatient surgery wards.
In total, seven surgical tables with the highest performance (one of which allows synchronised movements with the Da Vinci robot), seven surgical arches, seven scopic and endoscopic towers, five anaesthesia equipment, two surgical microscopes, seventeen bone-cutting motors, six double-arm surgical lights and six surgical imaging systems for endoscopy and laparoscopy with twelve 4K 3D screens have been installed. In addition, there are four transport stretchers for critical ICU and Resuscitation patients with defibrillator, ventilator and monitoring equipment, a monitoring room, an image integration and recording system and a fluorescence system for complex oncological surgeries in gynaecology and plastic surgery.
The renovation of all the hospital’s operating theatres will be carried out progressively. This is the first phase of the transformation of the entire area, which consists of twenty-four operating theatres, four of which are used for major outpatient surgery. In addition, there are three more in the Virgen de la Salud Hospital.
