The insular institution starts its Christmas programme with a new light show on the façade and the enlargement of the nativity scene
The Consell de Mallorca has kicked off the Christmas celebrations with the traditional switching on of the lights at the Palau del Consell. The opening ceremony offered a varied programme, including the inauguration of the nativity scene and shows for all ages.
A new feature this year was a light and sound show projected onto the façade of the building, combining music and visual projections. The nativity scene, designed by the Associació de Betlemistes de Mallorca, has been significantly enlarged to surround the entire main staircase of the Palau with more than 200 figures. It will be open to the public until the 6th of January from 10 am to 8 pm.

The interior of the Palau del Consell has also been decorated with the neules made by Macià Tugores, a Christmas tree located at the entrance of the building and other ornamental elements.
The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, stressed that ‘Christmas is a time to get together again, to live the traditions that identify us and to share them with all generations of Mallorcans’. He also stressed that ‘with this lighting of the lights we want to symbolise the start of a festive season in which union, solidarity and culture will be at the centre of all our activities’.
During the event, several choirs performed traditional Christmas carols, including the children’s choir and the adult choir of the Escola Municipal de Música de Santanyí, the children’s choirs of the University of the Balearic Islands, the children’s choir of the Escola Municipal de Música de Andratx and the children’s choir of the Teatre Principal. For the youngest children, the Circ Stromboli presented their show La màgia de Nadal (Christmas magic), which brought illusion and fantasy to the day. To close the event, a hot chocolate was offered to all those attending.
This event marks the beginning of a Christmas programme that will last until the 6th of January and includes more than 40 cultural, charitable and family activities organised by the Consell de Mallorca, under the slogan ‘El Consell de Mallorca, la teva família, també per Nadal’ (The Consell de Mallorca, your family, also for Christmas). Specifically, tomorrow the lights will be switched on at the La Misericòrdia cultural centre, accompanied by the opening of its exhibition halls that house the nativity scene, dioramas and neules.
The Consell de Mallorca encourages everyone to take part in the activities programmed for this Christmas, details of which can be consulted on the website.
