Tourists and commercial establishments in Menorca can now apply for BGreen 2024 grants

The new call for applications has a budget of 650,000 € and will subsidise actions to reduce light pollution and waste generation, among others.

The Department of the Environment, Biosphere Reserve and Cooperation has opened the call for applications for BGreen 2024 grants, an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable actions in the island’s tourist and commercial establishments. With a total budget of 650,000 euros, these grants are in line with the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Action Plan.

Simón Gornés, councillor of the Department of the Environment, Biosphere Reserve and Local Cooperation, stressed that ‘with these grants we support companies to continue advancing in the transition towards a more sustainable model, highlighting the shared responsibility between the administration and the private sector to preserve our natural heritage and ensure a balanced future that respects the environment’.

Tourists and commercial establishments in Menorca can now apply for BGreen 2024 grants

The BGreen grants include 5 eligible lines: the reduction of light pollution, with measures to update outdoor lighting installations by the Regulation on the Protection of the Night Environment; sustainable waste management, promoting the reduction, reuse and prevention of waste; the transformation of green spaces under environmental criteria, prioritising native species and biomass management; the improvement of water efficiency, with systems to reduce water consumption and reuse it; and finally, actions that contribute to a significant improvement in energy efficiency, such as energy audits and the actions included in these that do not imply an increase in consumption.

Tourist service companies in the restaurant, hotel, retail and leisure sectors that operate in Menorca are eligible for aid. Groups or associations of companies are also eligible for this aid. Applications can now be submitted until 10 February 2025. All the actions that wish to benefit from this aid must have been initiated between 1 January 2024 and 30 June 2025, and their justification must be presented before 30 September 2025. Each project may receive up to 75% of the total cost of the action, with a maximum of 15,000 euros per action.

Applications can be processed electronically through the website of the Consell Insular de Menorca, where all the necessary information and required documentation can be found.
