Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) and the Associació d’Amics del Ferrocarril de les Illes Balears (AAFIB) have signed a collaboration agreement whereby all the documentary material currently held by the association passes into the hands of the public railway company, so that it can be conserved and managed with professional means by SFM’s archive specialists.

José Ramón Orta, managing director of SFM, and Miquel Àngel Riera, president of the AAFIB, signed the agreement on Saturday 14th December 2024 in Petra, as part of the events organised to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the association, founded in 1989 to promote the recovery, preservation and dissemination of Mallorca’s railway heritage.

Signed the agreement for the donation of all the documentation of the Associació d’Amics del Ferrocarril (Association of Railway Friends) to Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM)

The agreement includes the commitment by means of which AAFIB will hand over, free of charge, all the documentation it currently holds, and authorises SFM to use, reproduce and disseminate these documents. The railway company, in turn, undertakes to transfer this documentation and to integrate, safeguard and preserve it in its archive, according to archival standards. The purpose of the agreement between both parties is to improve the conservation, protection and dissemination of the documents and the unification of the documentary collections of the Companyia dels Ferrocarrils de Mallorca.

SFM was constituted in 1994 and inherited the railway lines of the former Companyia dels Ferrocarrils de Mallorca, its attached assets and its documentary legacy. The AAFIB, an association set up in 1989, kept some of the documents of this former company, the predecessor of what is now SFM, on its premises. Through the agreement, these documents are now returned to their original place.

Among the documents handed over are curiosities such as station complaint books from the 1940s, notebooks with notes on the construction of the Santa Maria del Camí to Felanitx branch line in 1895, reports and balance sheets of the Montepío del personal, circulars and regulations of the movement part or documentation of the road services that the company also offered.
