The Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, has praised the professionalism, solidarity, empathy and great work being carried out by the military in the areas affected by the DANA.
The Minister of Defence said during a visit to Valencia that ‘after almost two months, the Armed Forces are still in Valencia and are doing so with the same predisposition and dedication as on the first day. This is earning them the affection and gratitude of the population, who now consider them to be part of the landscape in the affected areas. ‘The citizens know and feel that our soldiers are synonymous with security, protection and hope’, said Robles, who visited the towns of Benetússer and Picanya, before moving on to the military base in Bétera, pointing out that “it is difficult, if not impossible, to find a corner where you cannot see an Armed Forces uniform”.

After several previous visits to the affected areas, the minister wanted to return to congratulate the military personnel involved in the clean-up and reconstruction of the areas affected by the floods.

‘These are areas where the hard work carried out by the Armed Forces is allowing mobility to be restored thanks to the installation of modular bridges, the use of public spaces such as sports facilities or the opening of schools before the school holidays, when just a few weeks ago this seemed impossible. All of this, without forgetting the psychological support and the outstretched hand of our military personnel to the citizens,’ she said.

For all these reasons, the Defence Minister reiterated that ‘the commitment you are showing to Spanish society, and in particular, to Valencian society, is indisputable and beyond all doubt, even at this time of year. For this reason, once again, thank you. Thank you in capital letters. It is a source of pride to know that you are there and that you carry out your work with such professionalism, but, above all, with so much heart’.

Robles was accompanied by the head of the Military Emergency Unit, Lieutenant General Javier Marcos, who shared these words of thanks, to which he added a special remembrance for all those who have suffered injuries, wounds or health problems as a result of this operation ‘Valencia’, which ‘has shown that we have capable, versatile and prepared Armed Forces to deal with emergencies such as the one experienced as a result of the SWD’.
