The island institution will publish the call for tenders for the drafting of the project and construction management at the end of January.

The Consell de Mallorca has reported in a plenary session on the start of the necessary procedures to set in motion the process of decontamination of the old Alcanada thermal power station, an emblematic site protected as an asset of cultural interest (BIC). This was explained by the councillor of the Presidency, Antoni Fuster, in the plenary session of the institution.

The insular institution will publish the tender for the drafting of the project and the management of the decontamination work at the end of this month, an essential step to guarantee the viability of a new project at the site.

The Consell de Mallorca starts the process for the decontamination of Alcanada

The island institution has already carried out the clearing and cleaning work, preliminary tasks that have allowed the space to be adapted and the ground to be prepared for future decontamination work. In total, waste and vegetation accumulated over the years has been removed, thus contributing to the conservation of this unique environment. Access to the various buildings was also closed off.

Decontamination is a complex technical intervention that will make it possible to comply with the legal and environmental standards necessary for the recovery of the site. To guarantee the highest quality and rigour in the process, the drafting of the specifications has been outsourced to the Fundació Universitat-Empresa de les Illes Balears (FUEIB) and subsequently reviewed by the technicians of the Consell de Mallorca.

The councillor for the Presidency, Antoni Fuster, explained that ‘this milestone marks the beginning of a new stage in the history of the Alcanada thermal power plant, as for the first time real steps are being taken towards its decontamination’.

As soon as the tender is published, companies will have 30 days to submit their proposals for the drafting and management of the work.
