The Environment has trained some 50 public workers to ensure compliance with the Law.
The Directorate-General for Waste and Environmental Education has opened 71 disciplinary proceedings this year in relation to non-compliance with waste regulations. Specifically, 57 of these proceedings are linked to Royal Decree 293/2018, of 18 May, on reducing the consumption of plastic bags; the remaining 14 are linked to Law 8/2019 on Waste and Contaminated Soil of the Balearic Islands.

The control of compliance with the regulations has been carried out with the collaboration of the Directorate General for Consumer Affairs, which has been in charge of the inspections and of drawing up the corresponding reports.
The director-general of Waste and Environmental Education, Sebastià Sansó, thanked the Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs for their collaboration and recalled that, following the entry into force of the most significant articles of the Balearic Waste Act in March 2021, the Regional Ministry of the Environment and Territory trained around fifty public workers from various regional and island councils so that they could properly ensure compliance with the regulations.
For his part, the Director-General of Consumer Affairs, Fèlix Alonso, stressed the importance of collaboration between different administrations: “It is a responsibility that affects everyone and from which no one can feel alienated. The government is working to implement an innovative law that puts the Balearic Islands at the forefront of caring for the planet.
Sansó added that “the assessment, one year on, of the entry into force of the most significant articles of the Waste Law is positive”, although he stressed that “it was not until this year that the ban on single-dose bottles in the hotel and catering sector could come into force, due to the exceptional situation resulting from the COVID pandemic”. In this sense, he has advanced that the next inspections that are being prepared will focus on this specific point of the regulations.
