The members of the children’s ensemble are rehearsing for the concert on campus at the UIB residence, between the 1st and 6th of July. Pequeña Sinfónica is a project aimed at music students between the ages of 11 and 18, whose main objective is to raise awareness of symphonic music through a unique experience with the Orquesta Sinfónica Islas Baleares (Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra). The students come from Mallorca (37 students), Menorca (16 students) and Eivissa (11 students).

Prior to the camp, meetings have already been held around the islands in which the students and musicians of the Orquesta Sinfónica de las Islas Baleares rehearsed the repertoire of the concert. Tickets can already be purchased through Symphony’s website and the proceeds will benefit ASPANOB.

The Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns; Music for the Royal Fireworks for Winds by Handel (with arrangements by Vainas and Mackerras) and Venus and Saturn (The Planets) by Holst will be the works to be performed under the baton of Pablo Mielgo. In addition, the public will be able to enjoy two solo pianists: the young Liam Bleuse and Christoph Traxler.

The aims of the Pequeña Sinfónica project are also focused on creating a space to promote orchestras among young music students in the Balearic Islands; to deepen their musical knowledge through the experience of living first-hand what an orchestra is; to promote symphonic music and bring it closer to the world of children and to bridge the gap between the two. The aim is also to bring a professional orchestra closer to young people who are already training in music; to generate synergies with society by creating a framework of coexistence, a meeting point for children, under the umbrella of the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands.

This year a total of 88 students have applied and 64 have been chosen for tomorrow’s concert, subdivided into 16 violins, 7 violas, 10 violoncellos, 3 double basses, 3 flutes, 3 oboes, 3 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 7 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and 4 percussionists.

The students have submitted a descriptive sheet and a music video that has been assessed by the soloists of the Orquesta Sinfónica de las Islas Baleares together with the artistic direction, following criteria of quality and territoriality so that the maximum number of towns and cities are represented in the Pequeña Sinfónica project.
