The Health Ministry will begin the vaccination campaign on Monday 26th with the administration of the second booster dose to users of residences for the elderly (3,147 users), and then to people over the age of 80, with a target population of 53,028 people (42,944 in Mallorca, 4,699 in Menorca, and 5,385 in Ibiza and Formentera).

The former will be vaccinated in their own residences, and the latter will be able to do so in primary care health centres (or at home in the case of people with reduced mobility).

Once vaccinated – and while waiting for the Public Health Commission of the Interterritorial Council to adopt the definitive calendar of priority groups – the aim of the Health Ministry is to gradually extend it to other users and workers in homes for people with disabilities, sheltered accommodation and other institutions, health professionals working with vulnerable people in hospitals and health centres, and the entire adult population over 60 years of age.

The booster dose is administered to vaccinated individuals to boost immunity that is lost over time. The new Pzifer mRNA vaccines administered are bivalent, i.e. they protect against the original Wuhan variant and the omicron subvariants B.A.4 and B.A.5. At present, 90 % of the B.A.5 variant is circulating in the population and 10 % of the B.A.4 variant.

As for the doses administered, the Health Service has to receive 115,200 doses (89,280 in Mallorca, 8,640 in Menorca and 17,280 in Ibiza and Formentera) out of the total of 5.6 million that the Ministry has received in the first consignment committed to Pzifer. Of these, Mallorca already has 20,160, and Menorca and Ibiza already have 100%.

On the other hand, the latest data published by the sentinel surveillance network for acute respiratory infections indicates that in week 36 (5-11 September) the flu rate was 100 per 100,000 inhabitants, with a predominance of respiratory viruses other than influenza and SARS-CoV-2.

Health plans to start the combined COVID-19 and influenza campaign in the second half of October.
