This event was organised by an international multidisciplinary group of experts and chaired by Dr. Marcio Borges, member of the Scientific Coordinating Committee of the Multidisciplinary Sepsis Unit at Son Llàtzer University Hospital and president of the Sepsis Code Foundation.

TECNOSEPSIS was mainly aimed at healthcare professionals and researchers, and its main objective was to create an interdisciplinary forum to explore and analyse the latest technologies applied to the treatment of sepsis and serious infections. The raison d’être of this event was to generate debate between the different agents involved, healthcare professionals, institutions, diagnostic, pharmaceutical and technological companies in the established approach to sepsis.

On 5, 6 and 7 October, Son Llàtzer Hospital hosted the 2nd International Meeting on Innovation and Sepsis – TECNOSEPSIS in Son Llàtzer Hospital

TECNOSEPSIS has also sought to bring about changes in the paradigm of the classic approach and treatment of sepsis, incorporating new technologies and promoting new tools to achieve earlier and more accurate diagnoses, more exhaustive monitoring, as well as a more comprehensive approach open to new therapeutic options.

In 2019, one in five deaths worldwide was caused by sepsis, a complication due to infection that can kill a patient in a matter of hours. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted a real need to develop new technologies to manage the care of these patients.

As Dr Borges explained from Son Llàtzer Hospital, “artificial intelligence is a technological revolution that in the field of medicine can exponentially improve patient care, especially for oncology patients and those with chronic diseases, but also for septic patients. Our hospital has been working for three years on artificial intelligence tools for the early detection of septic patients, with excellent results”.

TECNOSEPSIS is the first congress in the world to focus on innovation and sepsis. In this second edition, more than forty clinical experts, researchers and academics from both public and private institutions took part.

The panel of experts is from Son Llàtzer Hospital, more than twenty different countries (United States, France, South Korea, Germany, England, Turkey, India, United Arab Emirates, and Spain, among others). They have brought unique perspectives in diverse areas such as nanotechnology, microbiology, artificial intelligence, new therapies and healthcare resource management.

Experts such as Professor and nanotechnology expert Sonia Antoraz, from London, Vice-Dean of the Department of Physics at Oxford University; Dr Craig Coopersmith, Director of the Department of Intensive Care Medicine at Emory Hospital, USA; Dr Gee Young Suh, Dr Gee Young Suh, from London, and Dr Craig Coopersmith, Director of the Department of Intensive Care Medicine at Emory Hospital, USA; Dr Gee Young Suh, head of Critical and Pulmonary Care at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, Korea; and Dr Jorge Hidalgo Marroquín, current president-elect of the World Society of Intensive Care Medicine, are some of the renowned speakers who have participated in TECNOSEPSIS.

According to Dr Borges, “the new treatments for sepsis will also revolutionise your care because they will be personalised treatments. In addition, new antibiotics are increasingly safe and effective against the growing number of multi-resistant bacteria”.

In conclusion, Dr Borges adds that “there is still a gap between the emergence of new technologies and their application in clinical practice. Personalised medicine is the best medicine, but we will only get there by using new technological tools for diagnosis and treatment. Nanotechnology applied to sepsis will be one of the revolutions in diagnosis and treatment because it will be fast, effective and economical.

The aim of this forum at Son Llàtzer Hospital is to build bridges that serve as lines of communication and scientific exchange between different professionals, hospitals, universities, research institutes, administrations and public and private companies. Beyond being an event, TECNOSEPSIS is an effort created to start talking about the importance of innovation, development and technology to save and improve the quality of many lives affected by sepsis.
