Starting this Saturday the 15th of October, anyone strolling around the city of Ibiza will stumble upon the memory of eighteen victims of fascism who were born on the island and to whom the Government and the Town Hall are paying tribute through the Stones of Memory project, promoted by the Vice-presidency and Department of Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory.

These are paving stones containing a brass plaque, in the case of the Stolpersteine, or stainless steel, for the Remembrance Stones, with information about the victim – name, place of birth, when they were arrested, where they were imprisoned, and date and place where they were murdered or released; and which are installed in different places that correspond to those in which they lived.

On this occasion, sixteen brass paving stones will commemorate the lives of sixteen Ibizans deported to Nazi concentration camps, many of them Republican exiles who ended up in Mauthausen, also known as “the camp of the Spanish”. They are part of the international and decentralised Stolpersteine memorial that the German artist Gunter Demnig has been directing since 1992 in homage to all the people who were deported and murdered by Nazism and which is based on the premise “one person, one stone”.

In addition to these, there are two more steel stones, two Remembrance Stones, which commemorate two direct victims of Franco’s repression. It is a tribute that, since 2018, at the initiative of the Associació Memòria de Mallorca and the Stolpersteine Foundation, has extended the memorial of the stones of memory to the victims of Franco’s regime, which it recognises as victims of fascism due to the link between Franco’s regime and Hitler’s regime, and the first of which was installed that same year on the island of Mallorca.

The Government is thus extending the project of the Stones of Memory of the Directorate General of Democratic Memory, which, in addition to the paving stones it is placing on Mallorca and Menorca, now has almost twenty stones of memory on Ibiza, with the intention of continuing to extend its footprint and to extend it to the island of Formentera as well.

“It is necessary that we remember, that we remember, that we know what happened; that we never forget, as the families of the victims have done, because in oblivion lies the darkness in which fascism and Nazism survive,” said Jesús Jurado, the regional secretary of Democratic Memory of the Government. “May the stones that we place today, and the names inscribed on them, serve to remind us every time we pass by that the threat continues to exist, but that with brave people committed to democratic ideals, the light will always be able to overcome the darkness,” he added.

“Vila is a city with a more democratic culture; a more dignified city. These stones are another example of the work being done by progressive governments over the last seven years in the area of Historical Memory. We are very happy about this joint initiative with the Govern for the installation of these stones that will make Ibiza one of the cities where people murdered by Franco and Nazism are remembered”, said Mayor Rafel Ruiz.

Of the eighteen stones that have been placed in Vila, twelve are located in Passeig de s’Alamera (Vara de Rey). They are the Stolpersteines that commemorate: Antoni Ferrer Calvo; Antoni Planells Bonet; Antoni Rosselló Roig; Bartomeu Marí Escandell; Bartomeu Vallori Andrade; Joan Bonet Ribas; Joan Palerm Planells, Joan Torres Ribas; Vicent Juan Torres; Vicent Ramon Tur; and Pere Ferrer. There is also a Remembrance Stone in memory of Vicent Marí Cardona.

In addition, five other Stolperstein have been placed at:

Carrer Enmig, 36 Bis: in homage to Llorenç Cobos Lluy;

Carrer Vista Alegre, 7: in homage to Just Gutiérrez Serra and Agustí Gutiérrez Serra;

Carrer Portal Nou, 6: in homage to Vicent Cabanillas Ramón;

and in Avinguda Ignasi Wallis, 28: in homage to Antoni Bonet Tur.

As well as a Remembrance Stone in Carrer Josep Verdera, 10, in memory of Joan Gómez Ripoll.
