The President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, has taken advantage of the 2022 end-of-year speech to vindicate the efforts of the entire island society in the economic and social recovery and has defended that 2023 will be the year of the “consolidation of an unstoppable transformation” in terms of, for example, the energy transition.

That is why this year’s video was filmed in Santa Eugènia, the site of the first shared energy self-consumption project in Spain, where the solar panels installed at CEIP Mestre Guillemet provide green energy for the school, municipal facilities, the health centre, and surrounding businesses and homes. For the President of the Govern, they are “an example of what we want to be as a society”, as well as “reminding us that the path we have embarked on to become a 100% renewable island is the path we must follow”.

During her speech, Francina Armengol recalled the milestones achieved in recent years in terms of sustainability and energy transition, but also economic recovery and social protection, and highlighted the Government’s social shield “in the face of the uncertainty of inflation and the international context”. In this sense, he mentioned the return of university fees to families with young people enrolled in university, aid for extracurricular activities, grants for vocational training students, free public transport as of 1 January, and the free 2-3, “a step forward that we will never undo”.

He also explained some of the goals that will soon be met, such as the expansion of Parc de Llevant, the remodelling of Verge del Toro, the new 061 base in Formentera and the completion of public housing under construction, which will allow the legislature to end with a 72% increase in public housing stock in the Balearic Islands compared to 2015.

Francina Armengol. The importance of dialogue in the recovery

The President also insisted on the need to “overcome the challenge better and stronger than anyone else. Working together, providing all the resources to take care of people”. Francina Armengol recalled that the Government has created “measures so that the unique opportunity of European funds can reach companies while we become the economic engine of Spain”, and she claimed that “the Balearic Islands are a land of harmony and dialogue”.

Finally, the President of the Government assured that “we can say that 2022 has been the year of complete economic and social recovery” and that 2023 will consolidate this transformation, and will make the Balearic Islands a “benchmark of economic, social and environmental sustainability”.
