The Consell increases by 150% the number of places in residential housing
The councillor Javier de Juan and the island director of Equality and Diversity, Rosa Cursach, presented the Aurora Project on Tuesday. A network of housing in different municipalities of Mallorca for victims of male violence and their children while the process of comprehensive care lasts and also includes a shelter for women victims of sexual exploitation. The Council has put out to tender the creation of 60 new residential places in addition to the 41 that the Council has had until now in the Ariadna home. Thus, the institution will have 101 places in flats to care for victims of male violence. The Aurora Project means a 150% increase in the number of places, which means going from the current 8 homes to 30 flats.
De Juan explained that the Consell is committed to the creation of a comprehensive care service for victims of gender violence, with a circuit that can guarantee the protection and recovery of these women during the different stages they have to go through for their recovery. A first reception service, to then begin a stage of recovery that has to be carried out in residential shelters, and if necessary, in parallel to the second phase or as soon as possible, an itinerary of labour insertion. This comprehensive care includes the creation of specific centres for health problems that may be associated with male violence.
“The Consell de Mallorca is working to create a more egalitarian society and until this becomes a reality, women who have been victims of gender violence must be cared for in the best possible way. We have found that in general it is more convenient for a woman victim of male violence to have a home, a single-family flat, so half of the 30 homes are single-family homes,” said de Juan.
The councillor explained that the Aurora Project improves care in a more personalised way and adapted to the realities of each of the women and children. He also stressed the reduction of the risk of contact with the abuser with more locations throughout Mallorca.

The Aurora project fulfils the commitment of the Law of Equality of Women and Men. The Aurora project’s shelter service foresees a progressive implementation, where, with possible modifications, the ratio of one place for every 3,500 women over 18 years of age is met.
“This is a service that provides comprehensive and continuous care over time for the women who receive it, which requires absolute professionalism and sensitivity towards a group to which the administration cannot fail, as it has to ensure their safety and protection, accompanying the women in their recovery process. All the actions will guarantee the confidentiality and safety of the women”, said the councillor de Juan.
The data collected on the occupation of the Consell’s shelters for victims of gender violence during the year 2021 indicate that in total there will be a maximum occupancy of 126 people. A figure that will not be reduced in 2022.
The island’s director of Equality and Diversity pointed out that “analysing the occupancies we estimate that the housing needs are 90 places, with the Aurora project we reach 101 places in which the women will have comprehensive professional care”.
Cursach explained that comprehensive care involves social monitoring of the users, developing personalised work plans for each situation; intensive accompaniment during the first few days, during the stay at the resource, leisure activities, social interventions and therapeutic interventions, networking with specialised and community resources, etc.
The island director also pointed out that the Aurora project will provide the women with a suitable space for accommodation with all the necessary infrastructures and conditions, covering their personal hygiene needs, clothing and food items, pharmacy, etc. They will also be attended to by professional teams, including legal assistance for information, advice, carrying out formalities, accompanying them to police statements and psychological care.
Cursach stressed the importance of coordination to reduce duplication and ensure greater efficiency in assistance. “Coordination will be carried out with professionals from organisations, public administrations, courts, law enforcement agencies and security forces. They will also be referred to other resources, if necessary even to accommodation resources outside Mallorca, if the person has to be transferred. “The most important thing is to guarantee her safety and that the woman is protected,” she said.
